📝 In his interview with Caspersight, published on June 27, 2026, Jonathan Reed revisits the encounter he says occurred on October 15, 1996, in the mountains near Seattle, Washington. Their conversation covers his background, the forest incident, the being he calls “Freddy,” alleged attempts to suppress his story, and the “Link Artifact.”
Caspersight begins by asking about Reed’s qualifications. Reed says he started college in 1970 at San Diego State University, earned a teaching degree, then attended UCLA for premedical studies and a psychology PhD programme. He says he moved to the University of Washington Medical School in 1979 and subsequently worked in child development, eventually heading a department. He describes almost sixteen years of professional work before the encounter forced him to leave that life. He also insists that he previously had no interest in ufology or science fiction.
Reed says the hike was a spontaneous decision after appointments were cancelled. He left Seattle at approximately 11:30 with Susie, his seven-year-old golden retriever, and drove about fifty-five minutes to a familiar walking area. He describes an abandoned logging road surrounded by trees and ferns, with other people near the parking area. Susie, whom he describes as calm and obedient, was running off the leash. When Caspersight asks whether unusual dreams, headaches or feelings had preceded the trip, Reed says nothing had seemed out of the ordinary.
After about an hour, Susie ran ahead and her barking changed to growling and cries of distress. Thinking she might have encountered a bear or mountain lion, Reed picked up a long fallen branch and followed the sound. He says he descended through thick brush and saw a small humanoid violently shaking his eighty-pound dog. An additional black appendage appeared to extend from its close-fitting suit and tore her head away from her backbone. He describes a hole opening in her chest, her body folding into itself and dissolving into white ash.
Reed says he struck the being’s head with the branch in an immediate reaction of rage, fracturing its skull and knocking it down. Caspersight questions the danger of confronting something so strong; Reed replies that he was reacting instinctively to the death of a dog he regarded as his child. Asked whether he collected any ash, he says he photographed it.
He then describes collapsing beside the motionless being, vomiting, losing control of his bladder and bowels, and struggling to breathe. He says he remained almost face-to-face with it for close to an hour before crawling towards his backpack for water. Asked about its appearance, he describes red blood, large almond-shaped eyes, a slightly enlarged head and an otherwise broadly humanlike body. His first thought, he says, was that it might be a creature produced in a biological laboratory. He also recalls a rotten smell and an impression of receiving a mental warning to stay away.
A low, fluctuating humming sound drew his attention to a black object approximately seventy-five feet away. Reed calls it the “obelisk” and describes a horizontal, elongated diamond shape, approximately twelve feet long, two and a half feet high and three feet wide, hovering three feet above the ground. He says it had no openings, seams, wheels or landing gear, and felt like stone.
According to Reed, touching it burned his hand like dry ice and briefly gave him the impression of being inside a vast, dark hangar with distant lights. Caspersight asks whether he believes he actually went somewhere; Reed says he cannot explain what happened. He adds that touching the surface changed the humming tone and that the object would not move even when he pushed against it.
Reed says he recorded the being, the ash and the obelisk with a camcorder, then used a Nikon 35mm camera to take photographs. He attributes disturbances in the video to filming near the object and explains that photography had been a lifelong hobby.
Afraid he might have killed something and face imprisonment, Reed initially considered covering the body and leaving it in the forest. Instead, he says, he rolled it inside a thermal blanket and secured it with backpack straps. He estimated its weight at only thirty to forty pounds. While carrying it towards the Jeep, he recalls suddenly finding himself beside the vehicle without remembering the intervening walk. Caspersight suggests shock as a possible explanation.
On the drive home, Reed says he stopped at an empty ranger station seeking help and repeatedly pulled over because he was sick. At home, he placed the wrapped body in an operating chest freezer in his detached garage. He then called his girlfriend and his longtime friend Gary, an architect, leaving a message that Susie was dead and he needed help.
Reed says Gary initially suspected hallucination but changed his reaction after watching the recording and seeing the body. Gary stayed overnight to look after him and began contacting organisations the following day. They also returned to the forest, where Reed says the obelisk, blood and ash had vanished. Even ferns he remembered disturbing appeared restored. Asked whether he was certain of the location, he says he recognised distinctive trees.
Reed recounts meeting people who presented themselves as MUFON representatives at a restaurant. He says he gave them photographs, some negatives and a short copy of the forest recording, while withholding that the body was at his house. They promised to contact him, but their telephone number subsequently proved disconnected. Reed says he and Gary retained copies and began storing material elsewhere, eventually sending evidence outside the country.
He also describes break-ins at his relatives’ home and his own house, followed by a visit from two men and a woman dressed in black. They allegedly said they knew what he had and asked where his dog was. When he threatened to call the police, they indicated a police car outside and said the police were with them. According to Reed, they identified their group as “the school” and warned that the next visitors would be less friendly. Caspersight asks whether he thinks they were nonhuman; Reed says he cannot make that claim, although their appearance, speech and clothing struck him as unusual.
Reed says his colleague Allan subsequently reported men removing files and belongings from his office. He claims his workplace then denied employing him and that records of his education and qualifications disappeared. Caspersight asks how he could prove his background today. Reed describes investigators collecting statements from former acquaintances and relatives, and lawyers attempting to recover his records. He says his passport was eventually restored after his lawyers threatened publicity, but other records remained unavailable.
Discussing the public history of the case, Reed credits Art Bell with bringing it to a large radio audience and recalls speaking at the International UFO Congress. He says investigators spent two years examining his background. He also claims to have passed two polygraph examinations and rejects accusations that he fabricated the photographs and recordings.
Reed describes laboratory work on samples of blood, tissue and bone. He says the results showed forty-six chromosomes, with nine pairs displaying partial similarities to dolphins and sea turtles, along with nucleated blood cells and unusual bone material. He names pathologist Rodger Haggitt and connects his killing to the alleged research. He also describes another collaborator dying in a hiking accident and says Harold Chacon, another participant, moved to Puerto Rico after threats. Caspersight asks whether the killing was documented and whether it might have been coincidental; Reed says it was reported in Seattle newspapers and rejects coincidence.
Returning to the garage, Reed says that on the third day he heard scratching near the freezer. When he opened it, the being rose from the blanket and screamed so forcefully that he nearly lost his balance. He fled into the house and called Gary. According to Reed, both men then witnessed the being rise and scream again.
At Caspersight’s request, Reed plays a recording he attributes to these cries. He explains that he recorded them on a later occasion by leaving a recorder running in the garage. Caspersight asks whether the freezer had been switched off; Reed says it remained operating throughout.
Reed also describes an examination filmed on the second day, while he still believed the being was dead. Wearing gloves, he moved its limbs and head and inspected the skull wound. He says he attached the camcorder to a ladder when he needed both hands. Only afterwards, when somebody watched the recording, did he notice movements of the eyes and facial muscles.
Asked for physical details, Reed describes large eyes with a possible inner eyelid, numerous small sharp teeth, a purplish-red tongue and thick, weathered skin. He says its colour changed from bluish-grey in the forest to darker pinkish-brown shades in the freezer.
He compares the suit to tightly fitted black spandex that could not be pulled away from the skin. Reed says two cuts made with a craft knife immediately closed, while a third attempt was resisted by the material itself. He calls it self-healing nanotechnology and claims he described it years before a later NASA announcement about self-healing spacesuit material. Caspersight asks whether his account preceded that announcement, and Reed says it did.
Around the ninth or tenth day, Reed says he saw vehicles outside his home and people removing possessions. After calling the police from a friend’s house, he returned to find the building ransacked, holes in the walls, floors and ceilings, and the freezer missing. Small wet footprints crossed the garage towards a wall, leading him to hope the being had escaped.
About a month later, he says, the same creature materialised inside his home. He recognised its markings and healing head wound and began calling it Freddy. Reed claims it continues to visit him, sometimes weekly, communicating through mental pictures. These included images of Reed swinging the branch, sensations of pain, and Susie running in the forest.
Caspersight asks whether these experiences might themselves have been projected illusions. Reed acknowledges that possibility in principle but says his photographs, recordings and biological samples convince him otherwise. He also claims Freddy has appeared to other people who have spoken with him. When asked where the being is now, he replies that it is with its own kind and continues coming and going.
The conversation then turns to the Link Artifact, a silver cuff-like device. Reed says he once put it on while sitting with his coauthor Robert Raith, whom he describes as deceased. It allegedly tightened around his wrist, inserting three large gold needles into his skin and nerves, before opening by itself as the metal changed shape.
Caspersight says the forest footage and photographs impressed him, but the recording of Reed apparently disappearing and returning was where the story lost him. Reed responds that he understands and would also find the account difficult to believe without his own experiences.
Reed says the demonstration took place on a television programme near Toronto, Canada, after a presenter offered him a vacant guest slot. He recalls requesting a continuous camera shot and performing before a live audience. He describes being surrounded by an energy bubble resembling fine fibres, followed by darkness and a sudden transition into a large white, egg-shaped room.
There, he says, he encountered two towering, moving columns of light that reminded him of angels. They allegedly reassured him telepathically and told him they would return him. Reed describes an overwhelming feeling of peace and affection and says he did not want to leave. He recalls returning to his original seat in considerable pain.
Asked what he has gained from the experience, Reed says he is convinced humanity is not alone. He describes Freddy as a highly intelligent geologist whose task was to study Earth’s rocks. Caspersight observes that Reed’s attitude seems to have changed from hatred to affection; Reed says respect is the more accurate word. He now believes Susie’s death was an involuntary response to the circumstances, although he says attempts to discuss it with Freddy have not produced an explanation he understands.
The closing discussion covers spirituality and UFO disclosure. Caspersight raises religious interpretations of such beings and speaks about his own sense of spiritual protection. Reed describes himself as spiritual rather than religious and says the experiences made him more open-minded. He criticises disclosure as a slow release of information that does not show the direct encounters people want to see.
Reed also alleges continuing intimidation, including being pushed down a flight of stairs shortly before the interview. Discussing his book, Link: An Extraterrestrial Odyssey, and the documentary Contact in the Woods: The Dr. Jonathan Reed Story, he describes the film as a personal portrait that may reveal the trauma he associates with these experiences. He says its release had been delayed by distribution problems and that it could become the first part of a three-part series. The interview ends with Reed acknowledging that he does not have all the answers and thanking Caspersight for allowing him to tell his story.
