Hi Owen, happy to engage on the merits of her statement here. Yes, there is corruption in Ukraine. I’ve actually disagreed with the government’s decision to sanction her, and I’ve been critical of the Zelenskyy government in the past. There are legitimate concerns about silencing critics, and I know people who have been sent to the front because of believed or perceived actions against the government. That is bad. It erodes trust and confidence and should be called out. But acting as though she is some lone, brave truth-teller exposing corruption no one else will discuss is deeply disingenuous. Western media has covered corruption in Ukraine extensively, across the ideological spectrum. Ukrainian journalists and independent outlets do the same every day. A simple search makes that obvious. Of course defense companies profit from war and lobby for defense spending. That is not evidence of some grand conspiracy keeping Ukraine at war. The war continues because Russia invaded Ukraine and continues fighting while demanding additional Ukrainian territory it has not been able to conquer militarily. If Yulia is advocating for Ukraine to give up territory Russia has been unable to take by force, then she needs to say that plainly. Don’t hide behind vague appeals to “peace.” Say what the proposed peace actually requires: Putin retains control of roughly one-fifth of Ukraine, and Ukraine is then expected to hand over additional territory in Donetsk that Russia could not seize on the battlefield. That is not peace as some abstract moral good. That is a specific territorial concession to an aggressor, and it has consequences far beyond Ukraine. If your principle is that a sovereign nation should be compelled to surrender its territory because another country invaded it and the war became costly, then you are hollowing out the very concept of sovereignty. By that same logic, it becomes difficult to explain why borders should be sacrosanct anywhere. You cannot spend years arguing that borders define nations and then suddenly decide that another country’s borders are negotiable because defending them has become inconvenient. And we should be very careful about the precedent that creates. There are striking historical similarities here. History does not repeat itself exactly, but it certainly rhymes. Chamberlain also believed territorial concessions could satisfy an aggressor and purchase peace. The lesson of Munich is not that every negotiation is appeasement. It is that concessions made without changing the aggressor’s underlying calculation can simply buy time for the next act of aggression. And frankly, I would rather hear a serious argument for that position than endless boo-hooing about “world peace” like we are answering a question in a beauty pageant. Everyone wants peace. That tells us nothing. Tell me what you are actually advocating. Are you arguing that Putin should retain the Ukrainian territory Russia currently occupies? Say so. Are you arguing that Ukraine should surrender the remainder of Donetsk that Russia has failed to conquer? Say so. Are you arguing that Ukrainians who fought and died defending those communities should now watch them handed to the country that invaded them? Say so. Then defend that argument on its merits. And conservatives should be especially careful here. We cannot profess belief in national sovereignty, secure borders, deterrence, territorial integrity, and the nation-state and then abandon every one of those principles the moment they become inconvenient overseas. Those values either mean something or they do not. Peace may ultimately require painful compromises chosen by Ukrainians themselves. But advocating a sovereign country surrender land to an invading power is not some morally superior position simply because you attach the word “peace” to it. Surrender is not peace. And we will have become profoundly morally confused if we start pretending those two things are synonymous.

In June, Lavrov claimed that protecting the rights of Russian speakers in Ukraine was “key to a peace settlement” — while simultaneously annihilating predominantly Russian-speaking communities, destroying their homes, cities and lives. The hypocrisy is staggering.

Please read the letter. It offers no argument at all, much less any kind of legal analysis. It simply says "no genocide" -- and no apartheid as a bonus -- assuming readers will be gullible enough to believe the letter because a bunch of famous people signed it.

I’m fairly skeptical about the prospects of this “M&Ms” operation to shut down all air traffic to Moscow (but let's wait and see). But for the love of Christ Almighty in heaven, get this Kremlin-planted thought-virus out of your heads: “Why do this? Now the Russians will launch retaliatory strikes.” This is nonsense -- and a complete rejection of everything we have learned from the past 4.5 years of the largest war on the continent since World War II. There is nothing behind this idea except an attempt to attribute some degree of rational prudence and respect for moral boundaries to the Kremlin (which it most certainly does not possess). It also reflects the chronic and stubborn tendency of many outside observers to underestimate the maximalism of Russia’s ultimate objective in this war: the complete and final destruction of Ukraine as a state and its total absorption. Not the achievement of some ephemeral propaganda objective such as “guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO,” not merely the seizure of certain Ukrainian territories such as the Donbas, and certainly not the outright nonsense repeated by Russian sycophants that “Russia hasn’t even started yet.” (Apparently, for the past five years they have refrained from getting serious purely for sport, choosing instead to spend year after year beating their heads against a wall and catastrophically destroying their economy and geopolitical standing just for the love of the game, yeah). In this war, there is no functioning rule (and there never has been) that says: “If we refrain from doing X to Russia, Russia will refrain from doing X to us.” From the very first day of the full-scale invasion, Russia and Putin have used against Ukraine everything they possess, everything they consider feasible, and everything whose consequences they believe they can afford. If they could, they would have erased Kyiv from the face of the earth through carpet bombing, as in World War II --- just as they reduced, and continue to reduce, the dead cities of the Donbas and northern Kharkiv region (or Aleppo!) to Hiroshima-like ruins. The Ukrainian capital has survived all these years because of its resilience, the help of its friends, and the extraordinary heroism of its defenders since 2022. That is why Kyiv today does not look like Avdiivka, Bakhmut, Vovchansk, or Marinka -- places reached by the Russian army, sowing death and destruction. If they could, they would have destroyed the bridges across the Dnipro years ago, drastically complicating logistics between the two banks of the great river for the Ukrainian army. They could not do so because of Ukrainian air defenses. They would also have launched an offensive from Belarus into western Ukraine long ago, cutting Ukraine off, for example, from the routes to Europe through which military aid arrives from the free world. But they cannot, because for years they have lacked the necessary forces and because the resistance of the Ukrainian military has been overwhelming. Like men possessed, for the past four years they have spent every winter and every summer carrying out regular mass strikes against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, trying to plunge the country into darkness and cold. As of January 2026, they had expended more than 13,000 missiles of various types and over 140,000 attack drones. Yet, at least so far, they have failed to achieve that objective, even though they have effectively destroyed all Ukrainian electricity generation except nuclear power. If they believed they could bear the full consequences of destroying Ukraine’s nuclear power plants as well, they would do it without the slightest sentimentality if it brought them victory. They have repeatedly carried out mass attacks against Ukrainian supermarkets, oil depots, warehouses, hospitals, kindergartens, railway stations, ports, airports, factories, and plants. They have brought (and continue to bring) Ukrainian apartment buildings crashing down, killing thousands of people. They did all of this because they could, long before Ukraine finally began striking back after years of war and Putin’s propagandists and their useful idiots started squealing about “state terrorism” and “retaliation.” And it goes without saying that they would ultimately have used tactical nuclear weapons long ago -- the weapons lovingly cherished in the sweet, bloodthirsty fantasies broadcast by their propagandists -- if they believed they could bear the catastrophic global consequences, including the response from their overlord, China. The problem at this stage is that capabilities develop, diversify, and accumulate over the course of a war on both sides. By now, both Ukraine and, to an even greater extent, Russia have succeeded in dramatically scaling up the production and use of something that was previously unavailable: cheap, simple, mass-produced, and effective medium-range strike capabilities. At this stage, neither side (especially Russia) has been able to achieve a decisive victory in this protracted war. So they are trying to reach beyond the enemy’s military forces, assets, and defense production, striking ever deeper into each other’s most vulnerable and painful areas: the civilian economy, daily life, and the basic needs of a modern society. The aim is to break the morale of the broader population and make people, through deprivation and casualties, beg their government to capitulate -- since it has proved impossible to break the deadlock on the battlefield. This is precisely what Russia is doing, powerless to defeat Ukraine on the battlefield. So there is no point indulging in magical thinking and lamenting: “Why did Ukraine burn down a Wildberries facility in Russia? Now Russia has burned Ukrainian supermarket warehouses around Kyiv, Nova Poshta terminals, and the Coca-Cola plant.” Russia would have done this anyway, as soon as it had developed the capacity to strike such a large number of civilian economic targets cheaply and at scale -- even if Ukraine, in response to an open campaign of national extermination, had showered the aggressor with flowers.

Supplying Taurus would be the correct response. it would be a clear, proportionate and linked response to constant Russian aggression towards Germany. When in 2023 Russia started firing Kh-47M2hypersonic & 3M-54 Kalibrcruise missiles into Ukraine i authorised the supply of Storm Shadow. We summoned the Russian Defence Attache and clearly explained why and that it was directly linked to Russian escalation. They didn’t like it but they understood it. Kyiv is going through the most sustained period of attacks by Russia of the war yet. Fascist Russia is using more jet-powered drones (versions of the Iranian Shahed), which are faster and harder to shoot down. The numbers being used are not significantly greater than before, but the attacks come in waves of a few drones every hour or two, so even as an air alert ends, another group of drones is on its way to trigger another one. While most of the drones are still being shot down, there have been hits on warehouses around Kyiv, largely affecting supermarkets and e-commerce. This has resulted in some shortages of certain brands of goods, and people stocking up on basic products like flour and cereals, which in some cases has emptied shelves still further. Ukrainian intelligence has been claiming for some days that Russia has prepared 35 ballistic missiles for a large strike on Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, but there have been no ballistic strikes on Kyiv for some days. Nevertheless, you always have to check whether an air alert is being triggered by a ballistic missile launch warning, as you will have minutes at most to react if missiles are incoming. You thus have to wake up for every air alert at night to check the situation, leading to broken and restless sleep. All this adds up to not just a military escalation by fascist Russia, but also (and perhaps even primarily) an escalation of Russia's psychological war against Ukrainian civilians in Kyiv and other large cities. The constant air raid alerts, the broken sleep, the anxiety over a possible ballistic missile strike, and worries over possible disruption to food supplies (not to mention electricity, water and gas supplies in the coming winter) are likely a deliberate tactic to raise the psychological pressure on Ukrainians without actually expending many more military resources. There has been speculation that Russia will continue this "non-stop" attack on Kyiv until the Kremlin holds its sham parliamentary elections in September, with Putin allegedly wanting "something to show" for his disastrous war ahead of the vote. However, with current levels of drone and missile production, Russia probably has the resources to continue this tactic for even longer, into the winter, when another campaign to destroy Ukraine's energy system is expected to be launched. Ukraine thus needs more air defenses - though interceptors for its Patriot system are unlikely to be given in sufficient numbers, and are anyway being expended in high numbers in Trump's foolish war with Iran. Ukraine needs more "long-range" weapons (like Germany's Taurus missiles) to augment its own arsenal for carrying out strikes deep into Russia on military and war economy targets - but these are not being supplied. Ukraine needs economic support, which could be given in the form of the EU's total €210 billion in frozen Russian sovereign assets - but Belgium refuses to release them. Ukraine needs the West to impose rigorous sanctions in order to hamper fascist Russia's weapons production - but large numbers of Western-made components are still showing up in the remains of recently made Russian missiles. Ukraine has, against all odds, fought fascist Russia to a standstill on the battlefield and through its own efforts begun to strike back at the aggressor. But without more help from the West, Russia might succeed in its probable goal of making cities like Kyiv "unlivable" during the winter months. The price of continued inaction by the West could thus be another influx of millions of Ukrainian refugees to Europe, which could further destabilize the political situation there - another of the Kremlin's goals.

Putin has rejected all Ukrainian suggestions to stop the war and negotiate. He wants his war to continue. Russia is about to mobilize and send to Ukraine up to 600.000 troops in addition to 750.000 already deployed. Indeed, we are helped with weapons and money to defend our homeland. Today Ukraine pays daily the price of Russian aggression with the lives and blood of its citizens. If Ukraine is defeated, this heavy price would fall upon the shoulders of the other European countries.
