Isn’t freedom supposed to be an American value? Then call things by their name: there is no freedom when men are trapped inside their own country, hunted down, and forced into the meat grinder of war—where they may be killed, maimed, or broken for life. Isn’t free speech protected by the First Amendment? Then I will use mine. I will call Zelensky’s government what I believe it has become: corrupt, increasingly authoritarian, and sustained by a war from which powerful people benefit while ordinary people bleed. And democracy? Spare me the slogans. There is nothing democratic about turning a country into an open-air prison for military-age men. A country where the president controls a rubber-stamp parliament; where the Prosecutor General steals millions and flees abroad; where Zelensky's business associates run the country; where dissidents, journalists, and political opponents are killed, persecuted, or sanctioned; where people are targeted for the "wrong" language they speak; and where neo-Nazis have penetrated the defense establishment. I am not rejecting Western values. I am taking them seriously—far more seriously than the political class that invokes them whenever convenient and discards them whenever they get in the way. Freedom. Democracy. Human dignity. These words mean nothing if they apply only until the state decides it needs your body. Political elites have turned noble principles into propaganda—fig leaves covering the oldest bargain in politics: ordinary people pay the price while the powerful protect their interests. War is that bargain stripped naked. The powerful give speeches. The ordinary bury their dead.

What has been consistently left out of the headlines is that Iran offered a seven day ceasefire but only if the US lifted sanctions, unfroze assets, and lifted the blockade, or some combination thereof. Completely unrealistic.

Here in Europe, it has become patriotic to keep silent about what is happening inside Ukraine. Borders closed to men have turned life into a cage for countless families. Corruption of colossal scale — a scale you simply cannot imagine — reaching the president's closest circle, set against total poverty, is about to kill the very motivation to resist Russia. The hunting of men, the torture in recruitment offices, men beaten to death by conscription officers, and sometimes killed by their own commanders — all of it resembles a brutal gladiatorial spectacle, in which ordinary Ukrainians have a single aim: to survive. Men flee across mountains and rivers; our own services pull out the bodies of those who did not make it. And ahead lies another terrible winter, without heating and without light. You are told of resilience, of dignity, of an unbreakable spirit. Which of the things I have just described reflects any of that? To ignore this suffering in the name of grand ideas, to conceal it behind beautiful words — that is inhumanity. In dark times, the hardest thing of all is to remain human. President Trump and I had a meeting where we discussed general matters. After that, our negotiating teams held a separate, long meeting. The agreement is as follows: we will brief the European side and discuss these details with them; the Americans will speak with the Russians; and in ten days, we will come back with views and results in some shape or form. As for a trilateral Ukraine-U.S.-Russia meeting, the American side proposed preparing it and meeting at the technical level. We are waiting for the United States to propose a date. The United States proposed the United Arab Emirates as the venue for such a meeting. There are concrete agreements regarding Patriot licenses.
