George Orwell (author of 1984) said:
"There are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them."
and boy are we seeing that in full effect today
really bright minds saying saying the most backward things
when people call them out on it, the response is always the same
"but look at my arguments! find flaws in my logic! look at all the times I've had brilliant deductions before!"
if you've reached a conclusion that's obviously bs, but it has a 10,000 pages of supporting arguments, I don't need to wade thru all of them to call bs
with the recent Navier-Stokes problem, we had a system of equations that simulate how fluids move
we thought it was correct
AI came up with an example where using that simulation and moving those fluids in a certain way accelerated them to infinity
in other words we had a theory, and AI said "well, taken to it's logical conclusion we can stir a cup of coffee in such a way that it moves faster than the speed of light"
...whoops.
we realized that was a BS conclusion and realized our reasoning was wrong
not because we found where the equation was wrong, but because we realized that it led to a BS conclusion
in other words, the dumb-ass conclusion of our reasoning WAS the proof that our reasoning was wrong
remember this when people present assinine ideas and then want to debate you on them
