NEW Astonishing growth of Chinese car market share in the UK, revealed in just released SMMT figures, albeit it should not be surprising, as I wrote three years ago. Just under 1 in 4 cars sold in the key month in September are Chinese brands/ built, just under 1 in 5 year to date, with Jaecoo 7 selling nearly 11k, top monthly seller (for second time after March and no 2 Year to date). In a market that is overall up 10% YTD and 12% in September vs last year, Chinese market share is up over 100% to 18%, 319k (YTD) and 24%, 84k (Sept alone). NB - am counting MG, BYD, Denza, Jaecoo, Chery, Omoda, Polestar, Smart, Lepas, Geely, Leapmotor, Changan, Xpeng, Aion, GWM, Skywell, Maxus.

Just back from a holiday in Scotland and managed to check on another piece of automotive history; the Argyll factory in Alexandria. It was probably Europe's first purpose built car factory and briefly had the highest output of any car plant in Europe in 1905.

The BMW 2800 was one of the cars that changed BMW. Not an M car. Not a coupe. Not a race car. Just a big, elegant BMW sedan with a straight-six under the hood. Introduced in 1969 as part of BMW’s new E3 range, the 2800 brought a 2.8-liter M30 inline-six producing 170 hp at 6,000 rpm. Rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel disc brakes. A four-speed manual, with a three-speed automatic available. And it could reach around 200 km/h. But the important part wasn’t just the engine. The 2800 gave BMW a serious luxury sedan with the driving character that would become central to the brand. It was BMW stepping into a higher class and showing that a big luxury sedan didn’t have to feel dull. In the U.S., it was even sold as the BMW Bavaria. The 2800 also shared its mechanical foundation with the 2800 CS, helping establish the E9 generation that followed. And honestly, look at it. That long bonnet, slim pillars and clean four-door shape still look properly BMW. This was the beginning of the BMW luxury sedan formula that eventually led to the 7 Series.
