Friday we met the Green Elf Cup.
Today, here’s the bit that really gets me…
The blue-green colour comes from xylindein, a fungal pigment that can be remarkably resistant to fading.
That means fungi were producing useful natural pigments long before we came along with laboratories, plastic bottles and names that sound like something from a chemistry exam.
And humans actually used this naturally stained wood for decorative work.
So technically, fungi were doing colour chemistry, wood staining and art before we even knew what chemistry was.
Not bad for something most people would simply call a bit of rotten wood. 🤪🔵🔵💜
