I get Mets fans still have insanely low self-esteem over the historically bad Pete Crow-Armstrong trade and Pete Alonso breakup, but it doesn't get any more artificial than this.
The attempt to push an average player like Carson Benge as some sort of star is laughably cringe and straight-up delusional.
Benge is Anthony Volpe of the outfield. Let's not forget Volpe also posted a 20/20 as a rookie and won the Gold Glove.
Benge has below-league-average bat speed and exit velo as a guy with very little upper-body strength, and wouldn't have even made the big leagues this season if New York had signed Kyle Tucker like they so desperately wanted.
Benge had 20 HR, 22 doubles, and 65 RBI in 654 plate appearances this year, and slugged just .430 -- an insanely low output for such a high volume of usage.
You give Spencer Jones that many at bats-- a much bigger, faster, and stronger athlete than Benge, and he's going 40/40.
