An inherited genetic mutation may increase lung cancer risk among people who have never smoked, according to a new Science study.

ALT An inherited mutation in the EGFR gene (EGFR T790M) increases lung cancer risk. In this illustration, lungs merge with a map of the United States, reflecting the geographic enrichment of the EGFR T790M mutation. Study led by @ZaidAbdelsattar and Alex Pohlman looking at EGFR and ALK testing among stage IB-IIIB non-squamous NSCLC pts in NCDB.
➡️ Huge differences in mutation testing btwn hospitals
➡️ Nearly half of pts do not receive appropriate testing, missing possible adjuvant options
A critical report in CHEST from a research team led by @ZaidAbdelsattar demonstrates a troubling trend that I hope does not extend to operable patients offered SBRT for stage I NSCLC. It shows that across 1,200 US hospitals, only 15% of patients are undergoing LN sampling before treatment. Their data also show inferior survival at facilities that are skipping LN sampling. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4152…
Asking all academic physicians. What would you do if your research manuscript is favorably reviewed at #1 journal of specialty but decision is offer transfer to open access companion journal. Would you accept transfer or resubmit to the #2 journal on your list? #medtwitter
The past 2 days were extra special. I had the honor of hosting @ShandaBlackmon my ever-present career mentor, sponsor & advocate, as our thoracic surgery visiting professor @LoyolaStritch. A thought-provoking talk on bias in AI & complex esophageal reconstruction masterclass! 🤩
