Ceazor's Rules to becoming a Master BookWorm
Always carry a book. I never leave my home without a book. If you like ebooks, make sure your phone has a ebook ready to read.
Choose your books, wisely. I like to keep the rule that i always finish a book, so this rule is more important. But maintaining interest is key here. No one want to finish a bore.
Get a library card. The modern library is struggling to attract young people, so as a result, they have removed a lot of the hurdles in many places. No more late charges, automatic renews, digital on hold queues. Not having to dump 20 USD on a book is a huge motivator.
Do worry about wear and tear, even if its a library book. Sometimes, (dont tell anyone), i even put notes in books with a pen, at chapter ends, to make the next reader interact with me. But obviously, this is not a deep study.
Read while you eat, especially if you are alone. Dont tell me that you can't, you certainly can check your phone between bites. You can read a book. YOu can watch Netflix. You can read a book.
Read while you walk. Whether you are getting your green, or even on a treadmill. I'm able to read while walking through crowded spaces like airports, malls, and on the sidewalks. I personally find the multitasking beneficial for focus. But thats me.
Select powerful books to own. books that hit you hard, make you think. books that you feel you can reread again and again.
Dont ignore your friends and family. These people are more important than your book, so dont give them an excuse to make your reading a problem. When they ask you a question, finish your sentence, or paragraph, then engage. Close the book.
Talk to people in the library/book store. Let them shill you their books. You are not a salesman, you are a consumer, so dont feel the need to dominate these conversations with YOU think is a good book.
Quit the shit. If a book is not pulling you in, stop. If you bought it, it is on a shelf for later. Later you might enjoy it. If its a library book return it. You can borrow it again later
Language franca is key. Good books are easy to read. It doesn't need to be difficult to consume, a chore to read.
Find your next book in a book you are reading. I tend to read a lot of trilogies and fanasty series, but there are often hints in book around other stuff that motivated them. check the references, and even the name drops in the text itself
Get more than 1. I usually put an entire series on hold. but also other books from the same author of one i really like. Make sure you have something to grab when your done.
Finish the chapter. Try not to end your session mid chapter. I tend to do one more lap of my walk so i can, I tend to shake myself awake so i can. When you make a habit of not finishing, you read shorter and shorter times.
Have a book in the john. Put a book in the bathroom, and dont bring your phone in with you. Even a book of shortstories, poems, or articles.
Sign up for a book account. Goodreads, your library app, whatever. WHen you log your read books, these apps are great for recommending you more to read.
Have a reading room. Pick a corner, or a room of your house that has a comfortable chair, and no computer or TV.
Brag about reading. Be proud of your reading. Tell people what you read, how much you read, and why you read. Dont be a dick, but make it part of you and its actually something to be proud of.
BONUS RULE for the boomers.
have multiply pairs of reading glasses. 1.0, 1.5, whatever. Dont be a magnification Nazi. Put them in the bathroom, on the bed side table, in the car, in your bag, and on the book you are reading.
