Here are 7 things I learnt on a 30 stop tour across the USA & Canada. The tour works best when…
1. The tour manager is responsible for logistics and operations regarding the performance. They also look after transportation, accommodation, and sometimes subsistance. They are usually on the promoters side. See them as the product manger.
2. The road manager often comes from the artist’s team or label and looks after welfare, quality control and morale. See them as the project, process and people manager.
3. You can’t have the same set list in every city. Check the backend data and triage it so you can pivot the performance for most impact.
4. You need to take out insurance. Tour buses will break down. Equipment will get faulty or lost. Ease your mind by having a back up.
5. Interaction with the crowd during the performance makes it all the more memorable. Call and responses work well! Pause to teach the crowd newer songs. Be engaging!
6. Post show amplification drums up interest for the next stop. Have a separate marketing budget from the promoter to keep the buzz going and build anticipation
7. Fitness and movement is essential to maintaining stamina on the road. Be as active as possible!
Bonus ones that still tickle me… we don’t have to find Nigerian food in every city. Try the local delicacies please! Oh and take care of your team. Have empathy and compassion.
