I don't care how clever you think you are, the era of writing code is over and eventually everyone who built their identity around being a programmer is going to find themselves unemployable.

the era of writing code is definitely over. i'm not sure about the unemployable part quite yet. given all the roles within a development team i doubt many of the non-coders in those teams actually have the stomach for what they are about to inherit.

I'm inclined to believe entire orgs would get compressed and eventually there won't be enough work left to justify the number of people currently attached to it.

It is like the end of draughtsmen. Engineering still occurs but at higher levels of abstraction, sadly most programmers are not engineers.

most orgs still exclusively test candidates to be proficient in programming, yea probably in the future, but in the short term this mentality will make you unemployable.

If you think that being a programmer was about writing code, you've been doing it wrong.

No one is going to hire a prompt jockey to make business products. Either make your own company or go back to burger king. Anything you can do with AI, a programmer can do better.

Nope. Not for the next 10 years. We are still at an early stage where all existing software will be (and is already being) rewritten.

You still need people to come up with ideas. AI is not going to do everything. I'd sooner trust the software engineers that have been keeping us going the past few decades than asking AI what we should build lol

From chisel woodcarver to cnc lathe operator. The first period would be brutal though, corporations will think that the lathe works by itself or without a skilled operator.

no one identified around being a programmer, "programmer" is merely a problem solver.

I see it differently as sbdy that's been playing n instrument for decades and now is low key obsessing bout making Ai music, I believe a coder will always get a better result vibe coding something than sbdy who doesn't know any code just like I can prompt advanced musical terms

You are still too niche & narrow in your statement. Employment at large is going to experience an enormous shifting & shrinkage over the next decade. You were never what society called you, & you were never what you did. I wish a soul crushing absolutely mind numbing ego death to all of you who think this way. The pain & dissonance you will experience is going to be extreme, but on the other side in your complete inability to be useful relative to & agent or robot is the emptiness to explore what you are as a human instead of existing simply to be only what you did. Embrace it, that's freedom. Until then, wishing you an absolutely crushing of your ego & soul. You need it.

Identify as a dev should have always been about shipping things that make money none of this code golfing “look at how beautiful the code is” Assembly people died on that hill when compilers came for them years ago.

The people who churned out business logic slop for years are doomed. Salesforce “developers” and their kind are probably fucked, but talented engineers with good taste will always be in demand.
