I'm almost done with Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. Talk about a book for our time. The toxic empathy, the conflicting and impossible desires, the failures of husbands and wives, the children as commodities, the politics as a replacement for true religion, the romanticizing of everything unto death. Whew. Gonna keep trucking, but right now I dislike every character.

For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. Proverbs 26:20-21
Sometimes the best way to defeat a bad idea is by isolating it and letting it die. If it is a parasite, without any generative power of its own, that’s what will happen. We can make the mistake of lending aid by vigorous opposition, generating sympathy and exposing fresh resources to feed the thing. This is why benign neglect can be the wisest course of action.

I loved Michael’s emphasis on high agency Christianity as the antidote to loser theology. Godly action and ambition are essential. God made us free in Christ to walk boldly by faith, take risks, and apply Christ to every single bit of life. Very grateful for the book—it’s worth reading for yourself.
My wife pointed out that the Home Fires podcast with Tilly Dillehay and Abigail Dodds talked about Loser Theology recently. (Tilly also endorsed the book.) It's good to know women are calling each other to reject passivity and become High-Agency Christians. Ladies, check it out! Spotify and Apple links below.

This is my home. There is no place like it—with its Mississippi head waters and ten thousand lakes, its lush farm land and deep freeze winters. It’s worth defending and fighting for.

Pray for France. Oh wait, wrong clip. This is the aftermath of the Minneapolis riots, after Tim Walz and his top advisor, Peggy Flanagan, let the city burn for four consecutive nights. Vote accordingly.

Please pray for and consider giving to this precious young widow.
Two of my former @BCS_MN students were in a tragic car accident this week: Stephen Clayton (MDiv '24) and Katie O'Shea Clayton (BA '25). Stephen and his son David are with the Lord. Please pray for Katie and John (her 11-month-old son) and her unborn child. Here's an opportunity to help a widow in her affliction (James 1:27): gofundme.com/f/support-for-t… Stephen was one of the finest men I helped to train—above-reproach character and highly competent. He came to my home on Saturday mornings to work out probably over 100 times. (We did a lot of weighted Murphs together.) I last talked to him when he attended our church's conference on the home nearly two months ago. He was full of joy and courage as he served as a lead pastor. He was a good man. He faithfully finished his race—far sooner than we expected. God is meticulously sovereign over a bouncing trailer tire. I think of Sarah Edwards’s letter to her daughter Esther shortly after Jonathan Edwards died from a smallpox inoculation: “My very dear child, What shall I say? A holy and good God has covered us with a dark cloud. O that we may kiss the rod, and lay our hands on our mouths! The Lord has done it. He has made me adore his goodness, that we had him so long. But my God lives; and he has my heart. O what a legacy my husband, and your father, has left us! We are all given to God; and there I am, and love to be.”

"We will never live in a homogeneously Christian society." I like Miller a lot, but this reads as wildly pessimistic and historically ignorant. England was a homogeneously Christian society for centuries. America obviously was as well. Both became so in places that were thoroughly non-Christian before. You can doubt the likelihood of a homogeneously Christian society, but to deny the possibility is a rather strange black pill to swallow.

What would Norm Macdonald say: “They thought the worst part of the Somali gang shootings was the potential stereotyping. But I disagree with that. I think it was the shooting innocent people.”

You could extrapolate this to just about every single vocation and it doesn’t miss.
I heard something on the @SteveDeaceShow yesterday I can't get out of my head. There's two kinds of politicians: those who want to do something, and those who want to be something. Man, there's so much explanatory power in that statement.

Hospitality is a super power and Christians should be the best at it. We are leaving so much influence and cultural power on the table, untouched, by our lack of hospitality. But the problem is more than “just have people over regularly.” It’s that lots of Christians’ homes need to get healthy, need to be worthy of imitation, need to be walking in a manner worthy of the Gospel, so they have something worth bringing others into. And that means marriages and families need more help, more applied Gospel, and more Bible wisdom from pulpits and pastors. Nobody needs to be perfect to be hospitable, but you do need to have the aroma of Christ rolling off of you, not strife or anxiety or irritation as the norm. Ask God for help in this, He’ll give it.

And I’ll add that most people do “just need to have people over regularly.” It will show you where you need to work on things. Don’t wait to get everything right first. Start having people over while you work on things. God will grow you real quick and the bigger blessing of giving will be yours.

Build and fight *in your home*. This exhortation based on Psalm 127 is from my fellow church member Clint Manley. (He presented a version of this article as an exhortation to our church. So good!)
“Kids don’t anchor ambition; they amplify it. They extend our reach to fronts we might never set foot on ourselves.” Clinton Manley discusses how children build up rather than distract from kingdom work. desiringgod.org/articles/hol…

But wait, there’s more… Another prominent Minnesota Democrat has surfaced in Nimco Ahmed’s political past: Amy Klobuchar. Ahmed appears to have worked on Klobuchar’s first U.S. Senate campaign in 2006. Other articles identify her as a staffer. Campaign finance records suggest she was paid nearly $8,000. The Klobuchar and Flanagan campaigns have not responded to requests for comment.
EXCLUSIVE: CEO of autism center under investigation was part of Klobuchar's first Senate campaign Back in 2006, Nimco Ahmed, the CEO of an autism center now under state investigation, joined the "Klobuchar team" during Amy Klobuchar's first Senate run, according to a profile at the time. A former employee told Alpha News last week that Ahmed's autism center is "fraudulent," an allegation Ahmed denies.
