Lufthansa is preparing to retire its iconic Airbus A340-600 fleet, bringing nearly 23 years of service to a close.
The final scheduled A340-600 passenger flight is currently set for October 18, 2026, operating from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Frankfurt (FRA) as LH419. The four-engine giant has been a Lufthansa mainstay since entering the fleet in 2003.
The retirement marks the end of Lufthansa’s A340-600 era, as newer-generation twin-engine aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 take over its long-haul flying.
The smaller A340-300 isn’t going anywhere just yet, however. Lufthansa is expected to keep some of the type flying into the winter schedule and into 2027 on selected routes.
