Commentary on the Protect College Sports Act.
The Protect College Sports Act got 77 votes in the Senate. Who does it protect, though? You wouldn't know if you watched Ted Cruz's unchallenged appearance on College GameDay. @Slate: slate.com/culture/2026/10/co…

Another threshold issue that I wanted to see how the appellate court would handle is the traditional judicial deference for voluntary associations. And that's one area where the Court of Appeals said the trial court erred.

It's not just that Tech is raising ticket prices. It's raising ticket prices alongside a veiled threat. One that more and more schools are making these days. It's on the fans to ensure we can compete. Invest to Win. Or else... foiaball.com/p/virginia-tech…

Ole Miss’ move to Adidas is a 7-year agreement currently being finalized. The per-year figure will be more than the $20 million annual deal Miami just signed with Nike. Adidas will provide significant NIL value to the Rebels.

I dug through the anonymized data the CSC filed in the House case on revenue sharing in 2025-26 and found some interesting facts: ➡️63 schools reached the cap ➡️5 schools came within 5% of the cap ➡️10 schools spent $0 on revenue sharing, although they did engage in Alston payments or increased scholarships ➡️14 schools spent less than $100,000 on revenue sharing, with the lowest at $15,000 ➡️72 schools reported no increased spending on scholarships ➡️31 schools spent $2.5 million or more on new scholarships ($2.5M was the max that counted against a school’s revenue sharing cap) ➡️122 schools reported they made no Alston payments Read more in my @ForbesSports piece: forbes.com/sites/kristidosh/…

Nike CEO Elliott Hill said on yesterday's earnings call that Caitlin Clark's signature shoe is "the largest women's signature shoe launch in Nike history." Nike is placing the shoe in 5,000 stores — twice the average for a Nike Basketball signature shoe.

If Texas A&M had never fired Kevin Sumlin and they continued giving him $2 million raises every 4 years and he kept his 66.2% win percentage, the Aggies today would have saved $102 million and had two more wins 👀 #AggieFactThursday

Meet Thomas, a 35-year-old who got hooked to FanDuel and DraftKings in the pandemic, ended up $50,000 in the red. He filed for bankruptcy and signed up for a Pennsylvania registry that banned him from using betting apps. More recently, he saw an ad for Kalshi offering a cash bonus. He got the app and couldn’t put it down. He’s now living with his mom and grandmother and taking loans from them to afford food and car insurance payments. “I have a gambling addiction” he wrote to Kalshi, begging for them to ban him, which they eventually did. But not before he was more than $25,000 in the hole. Thomas represents dark side of the prediction market boom: Problem gamblers who relapse with Kalshi, which has blanketed TV, social media, sports stadiums, bus stations, trains, with ads trying to attract new traders, just as they insist they are not a gambling operator. That means they don’t honor “self-exclusion” registries maintained by states like Pennsylvania. Mental health clinicians say that creates a loophole for people like Thomas. What really got Thomas were Kalshi’s 15-minute crypto markets, where you can make a binary trade on whether Bitcoin will be above or below a certain number every 15 minutes. There were times he was betting 18 hours a day in these markets. He told me: “The odds flip so quickly. It’s such a rush. And when I’d lose, my brain just kept wanting to win it back. I never even traded Bitcoin or any crypto, but I just kept coming back to the rush of how unpredictable the markets were.” A clinician I spoke to called 15-minute crypto markets “a slot machine in your pocket” npr.org/2026/10/02/nx-s1-598…

Many of UNC's football coaches appear to have 'inadvertently' signed a termination-release exhibit at the same time they signed their employment contracts with the university. More from @DanielLibit: sportico.com/leagues/college…

The general trend is that these injunctions and TROs are not holding up as they move up the legal food chain. My guess remains that most of the 100 or so basketball players who are currently eligible via a court order will not play this season. Just a guess!
BREAKING: In the Ohio 5-in-5 eligibility case, the First District Court of Appeals has reversed the judgment of the trial court's preliminary injunction. The players in the Ohio case remain ineligible. @ReboundRundown

Every powerful backer of the Protect College Sports Act got something: pooled TV money, a frozen conference map, capped labor costs, an antitrust exemption. Who was negotiating for the revenue athletes, and why is Sen. Maria Cantwell all in? My thoughts: linkedin.com/pulse/newslette…
Ted Cruz, Cody Campbell, President Trump, Randy Levine, Nick Saban, Deion Sanders, Charlie Baker, and Maria Cantwell can’t be happy that the Protect College Sports Act, which passed easily in the Senate, may never become law. I’ll try my best at concisely explaining each of their motivations in tomorrow’s #NIL newsletter.

I think it is wild @DanielLibit there has been no coverage of the outcome of the Bill Armstrong jury verdict. I was writing my story today and other than you, can find nothing on it. Louisiana media ignored it. I liked your preview article.

Just an astounding series of data points here from @NFHS_Org 's latest survey, released earlier this month: High school sports participation hit record highs for both boys and girls in 2025-26 But the girls’ numbers are the major headline.... -- Girls flag football saw a ~50% (!!!) increase YoY (and participants now exceed 100k nationwide) -- Girls wrestling saw a ~20% (!!) increase YoY -- Nearly 4,000 high schools now sponsor girls flag (+ more than 1,000 YoY)
