You were elected to 'finally bring the feudal leasehold system to an end', not make endless boastful announcements about tinkering with it. Do what you were elected to do. End it.
Leaseholders across the country are being routinely gouged by freeholders and managing agents acting on their behalf. This Labour government is taking on vested interests to protect leaseholders from exploitation. Today, we’ve announced we will cap exorbitant administration and permission fees and legislate for the independent regulation of managing agents.

Hey @mtpennycook, in January you promised that Labour would end the leasehold system in its entirety before the next election. Is there any update on this?

This quote from the Guardian article today sums it up perfectly: “The question for the government is whether the proposed reforms give the owners of the existing 5m leasehold homes a credible route out of their dependency – or just regulate their continued subservience.”
WE DID IT! 🙌 In July 2025, I introduced my Bill calling for a regulator for managing agents. Today, the Government has committed to introducing one. Managing agents found ripping off leaseholders will face losing their licences. A huge win for leaseholders.

Wrong answer. Give all leaseholders the right to manage and you don't need a regulator. I've had dealings with multiple UK regulators. They're all useless and in league with the industries they supposedly regulate. Do better

Why not just make it easier for leaseholders to appoint their own managing agent, as promised in the Labour manifesto and July 2024 King’s Speech with enfranchisement and RTM reforms you dropped? Regulators are toothless or get captured by the interests they’re meant to police.

PM says govt will introduce a bill before Christmas for “long overdue leasehold reform” “To the millions of leaseholders, you have my word- the days of you being squeezed for every penny are coming to an end.” Doesn’t specify details, or whether it will mean outright abolition.

Leasehold is broken and the market is grinding to a halt and this is your solution. It won't be enough. The game is up, buyers know leasehold and ahared ownership are a scam. You have not delivered on your commitments. @HarryScoffin @FreeLeasehlders

Let's be honest. This is subsidising developers, with taxpayer-funded subprime mortgages in a desperate attempt to boost newbuild targets.
Let's be honest. A lot of young people have stopped believing they'll ever own their own home. That's what happens when rents are high, house prices are high, and saving for a deposit feels impossible. My Labour government is stepping in to help. With Your First Home, first-time buyers will be able to buy a new-build home with a deposit of just 2.5%. Because hard work and saving should count for something. And because the dream of owning your own home shouldn't belong only to those with help from the bank of Mum and Dad.

Just more leasehold scam flats. And more negative equity.
This Labour Government is determined to bring back hope for young people. This is how.

“Move faster to solve climate challenges” ~ Prince William Yet, the Royal Family's two newly leased AgustaWestland helicopters flew 58,000 miles (420 flying hours) between February and November 2025. Visiting schools and posing for photos is about the only thing you're capable of. Unfortunately, you are failing miserably at your actual job of abolishing leasehold. Complete mystery why @andyburnham didn't sack you.

Wow. Leasehold is THE subscription scam. On his first day taking questions in Parliament as PM, @andyburnham promises @BarryGardiner, the stalwart of leaseholders, a Commonhold and Leasehold Bill this session. It’s core to Burnham’s attack on the cost-of-living crisis.

Labour should stop twiddling its thumbs and immediately launch bills to a) Ban Freeholders from managing their buildings. Only those paying service charges and other costs should choose Managing Agents. The principle is that only those paying the Piper get to name the tune.
Leasehold is blighting lives. Leasehold is a barrier to a fair and efficient modern residential property market. Leasehold is an anachronism in the twenty-first century. This Labour government is going to do what’s necessary, by the end of this Parliament, to dismantle it and emancipate leaseholders across the country👇🏻 gov.uk/government/speeches/h…
