Passengers just pulled a hijacked 737 out of a dive at close to the speed of sound. The plane fell 17,000 feet in under a minute. Everyone on board is alive. A C-17 pilot ran the math on the flight data and got a peak around Mach 0.98. For context, the 737 MAX is certified to cruise at Mach 0.82, and in flight testing Boeing dives it to roughly 0.89 and stops there. This airframe blew past all of it with a stabbed captain bleeding in the cabin and a passenger hauling back on the yoke. So why didn't it break apart? Certification limits sit nowhere near the actual limits. Regulators require every structure on a commercial jet to survive 1.5 times the worst load it could ever see in service. When Boeing tested the 777 wing, they bent it 24 feet upward before it snapped, at 154% of maximum design load. The engineers cheered when it broke. Something close to this happened once before. Back in 1985, a China Airlines 747 lost control over the Pacific and fell 30,000 feet in about two minutes, pulling nearly 5g and flying well past its maximum operating speed. The wings bent. Pieces of the tail tore away. It landed in San Francisco and almost everyone walked off. Every extra knot this airframe absorbed today was paid for decades ago by engineers stress-testing for a day nobody could predict. A copilot with a knife found that day. The margin was waiting.
From a military pilot on today’s attempted hijacking. I’ll sum it up for you: Hashem performed an unprecedented miracle today.

This is (horribly) interesting.
The flood in Nepal moved boulders the size of cars for one reason. The stuff flowing through those valleys weighed almost twice as much as water. Regular floodwater is about 1,000 kg per cubic meter. This surge came off a glacier avalanche loaded with pulverized ice, silt, sand and gravel, all moving as a single fluid. An engineering professor studying the disaster compared it to liquid cement. Debris flows like this approach 2,000 kg per cubic meter. Density is why the boulders move. Granite runs about 2,650 kg per cubic meter. Sitting in clear water, a boulder stays put forever. Sitting in a 2,000 kg slurry, buoyancy cancels roughly three quarters of its weight. A 500 ton rock suddenly pushes down like a 125 ton rock, and the current handles the rest. The same density means every wave hits a building with about twice the force of clean water at the same speed. That's why entire settlements ended up encased in mud instead of just soaked. The surge was violent enough to show up on instruments built for a different disaster. The USGS logged a magnitude 4.4 earthquake near the source, and researchers are still untangling whether a quake triggered the avalanche or the avalanche slamming into the river registered as the quake. On one stretch of the Trishuli, the water rose 30 feet in half an hour. More than 95 people are confirmed dead and over 1,000 are still missing. The boulder in the video is a measuring device. When something that size tumbles like a pebble, you're reading the density of everything around it.

Hi, Leo Neugebauer, famous German athlete, can you tell me what has happened to my friend's toy that you apparently didn't give back to her? Cheers.
Replying to @KatharineMerry
Kath, can you do me a favour? You know my mascot Polly, who I’ve had for 23 years & has his photo taken with hundreds of athletes? Well Leo Neugebauer walked off with him. I managed to speak to his coach and even him briefly & was promised I’d get him back, but no 😢.

Pam is a friend of mine. Let's get Polly back. I'm sure a famous athlete like Leo wouldn't want anyone to think he would deliberately keep an old lady's toy.

Does anyone know why there is deafeningly thumpy music going on in the Green Square area of Sydney? Asking for someone who has to get up at 5 tomorrow morning.

Why is Clapton trending? Please tell me it's not because Farage is MP for Clacton and everyone has had an attack of the stupids.

Oh, it's great to learn that @MayorofLondon is going to see the Nova Exhibition! You'll love it, Sadiq!
Classic political dodge here, seen it a thousand times. *The Secretary of State would LOVE to attend on [mentions dates a week after event closes]. Oh, it's finished by then? What a shame...* Backfires somewhat if you don't know the event is about to extend, though.

That is a lovely phrase!
My daughter's friend in grad school, upon being asked by a member of her dissertation committee why she didn't include a Marxist perspective. "I grew up in the Soviet Union. I don't practice recreational Marxism."

Once more for the people at the back. The differences between men's and women's sports are differences in what the BODIES can DO. They are not necessarily differences in what the BRAINS UNDERSTAND.

I am a Zionist. Many people out there don’t seem to understand what a Zionist is - and what it isn’t - so here you go. I believe in the existence of a Jewish home land, Israel, in the land of Judea, where it currently is. As a Zionist, I do not automatically agree with or support everything the country does, nor do I automatically agree with every government, every politician, every decision. As a Zionist, I am free to criticize policies and governments of Israel, just the same as I am to criticize the Canadian government or the American government or any other government. I can believe that the Israelis who spit on Christians should be charged, and I do. I can believe that the violence in Judea and Samaria needs to be stopped, and I do. I can believe that every single Israeli, regardless of religion, who commits rape, should be tried and should face the harshest punishments, and I do. I can believe that every single war crime committed by an Israeli should be prosecuted, and I do. I can believe that Israel should be held to the same standards of every other nation, and I do. The only things I don’t do, because I’m a Zionist? Call for the destruction of the only Jewish nation in the world. Hold them to a far higher standard than everyone else, just because they’re Jewish. Spread false propaganda about them, just because they’re Jewish. Because even though you pretend that’s “antizionism”, it’s just masking your true motives. Jew hatred.
