It might be the most unlikely legacy of 9/11, but 25 years later, the musical “Come From Away” continues to enchant audiences with its story about how Canadians opened their homes to their American neighbors, and the world, in the wake of tragedy.

The CIA on Friday released its largest-ever batch of declassified presidential intelligence briefs on the threat from Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida before 9/11. Among the 71 documents is a September 1998 brief warning that Osama bin Laden’s preferred option was to strike the U.S. on its own soil in Washington, adding that al-Qaida may fly an explosive-packed airplane into a U.S. city. The documents show both the Clinton and Bush administrations received repeated warnings, but experts say they do not fundamentally change what was known. The threat was clear, while the intelligence lacked the timing and specifics needed to identify the coming attack.

Families, survivors, first responders and dignitaries marked the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with somber and poignant ceremonies. That included major gatherings in New York, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. @GeoffRBennett has more.

Today we remember the evil of 9/11, as first reports of a small plane crash morphed into two and finally became a terror attack with hijacked passenger planes. We recall the horrific scenes of people jumping from the towers. But we should also remember the heroism: the fire fighters climbing stairs to their doom, the passengers on Flight 93 fighting back. We should recall that unity that Americans felt afterward in shared grief and outrage. But we should also remember how in that unity we made historic mistakes and turned to torture and waterboarding, and to an invasion of Iraq that cost $3 trillion and countless lives while benefiting Iran.
