“When the absolute value of the aesthetic is doubted, the reality itself of the aesthetic is doubted”

I don’t know if young people appreciate that it used to be just your few anarchist friends with daddy issues who said shit like this. Now it’s like half the professional managerial class

Last I heard the numbers of humanities majors/minors was way up at Berkeley as it’s a route to high-paying NGO jobs; the school’s internal marketing pushes this message on students
“The number of bachelor’s degrees awarded by [Stanford] in the humanities and arts has fallen 56% since 2003. This decline, from 324 in 2003-2004 to 143 in 2025-2026, has continued even as the overall number of undergraduate degrees granted has increased.”

Topics I discussed with 6yo as a result of her questions and observations during our walks in Berkeley: * mental illness/delusion * treatment prognostics thereof * heroin * opiates generally * alcoholism * overdosing * ambulance/emergency services thereof * sit/lie ordinances

Crazy WSJ data. Between 2022 and 2025, wealth increased 37% for Americans 75 and older, while **decreased** 23% for people under 35. wsj.com/economy/affluent-and…

I feel bad for Jorie, honestly. Her best work is as important as Carson's, more important than Glück's. She may be remembered over them

Congrats to Anne Carson. Wish they’d given it to her in 2010, after which her writing fell off a cliff. Read the incredible early work!

I thank the Pope for leaving claims about the divine inspiration origin of art to me
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

I vaguely remember a Britain where self-declared feminists would be bothered by this kind of thing
Replying to @NatSecSoc
We've reported this charity, the Hackney Islamic Community Centre, to the regulator - but it's just one of many charities who are promoting harm against women under the cloak of 'advancing religion'. secularism.org.uk/news/2026/…

The high-low distinction is already back. Most readers of genre fiction & of “literary” writing (incl. critics & juries) want the churned-out familiar, & those content to use AI will supply it. Meanwhile a small number will write & read the products of inspired human endeavour
On AI capabilities: the French press is all over the Haitian-Canadian novel C’était ça ou mourir. It's winning basically every award you can win, and was tipped to be the 2nd Canadian winner of the Prix Goncourt. Only one problem: 1/2

These stories are funny but they’re only surprising if you somehow haven’t clocked that much acclaimed writing for decades has been proto slop

For some reason, I am reminded of how difficult it is to get zoo animals to breed under captivity.
The unhinged level of parental interference here would have driven me insane at 9, never mind 19.
