Before Twitter, there was IRC. When Twitter is gone, IRC will still be here to dance on its smoldering remains. When humanity has gone extinct, cockroaches will still be using IRC.

You can tunnel IRC over whatever you want. If the main internet goes down people will be doing it over HamWAN or PSK31 or whatever transport still works.

I must IRC. IRC is the mind free-er. IRC is the little chat protocol that brings total satisfaction. I will use IRC. I will permit it to pass over my clients and through me. And when Twitter is gone there will be nothing, only IRC will remain.

IRC is probably the best online communication platform ever made. Not sure if I'll ever stop using it. It's hard to mess up community-owned things (including protocols), but company-owned things (like twitter) are very easy to mess up due to a plethora of reasons.

IRC still exists but Freenode is abandoned, and now we cannot tell a channel is whether on libera or OFTC.
