Wits researchers Dr Ifeanyi Michael Smarte Anekwe and Prof Yusuf Makarfi Isa, from the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at Wits University, have been honoured by the Royal Society of Chemistry for the Outstanding Review in Energy Advances for 2025.
Their article, Unlocking catalytic longevity: a critical review of catalyst deactivation pathways and regeneration technologies, looks at why catalysts lose performance over time and how they can be regenerated to work more effectively for longer.
Volker Presser, Editor-in-Chief of Energy Advances, described catalyst deactivation as “one of the key bottlenecks in industrial catalysis”.
“The authors critically map major deactivation pathways – from coking and poisoning to thermal and mechanical degradation and discuss both established and emerging regeneration concepts. The balanced discussion of effectiveness, trade-offs, and environmental implications makes this a genuinely useful reference for researchers and practitioners aiming for catalytic longevity,” said Presser.
