Thoughts about Matthew...
Matthew was written to a Jewish audience to show his Jewish audience that Jesus was the promised Messiah, to explain the Kingdom of God to his readers even though His own people had rejected Him.
Even His genealogy speaks of this fact: It begins with Jesus the son of David, the son of Abraham. This speaks to both of the covenants that God made with both David and Abraham. The former speaks of Jesus' kingship, the latter to his priesthood.
Even though He offered the kingdom to His people Israel in His first advent and was rejected, the promise still stands and one day He will return a second time to set up His kingdom.
However, His first advent ended with His death, burial and resurrection - securing for all that believe in Him eternal life.
Now notice the end of the genealogy - 'Jesus was born who is called Christ' (v16). He is the promised Messiah who fulfills and secures the promises made to both David and Abraham, and will one day make them absolute!
I can't wait!!
