doubling down on this:
it’s very easy to hate on finance and the people who work in it
but do you have the courage (& intellect) to understand the role they play in the economy in a dispassionate manner
i find the left struggles with this deeply, wanting to topple a system that they can barely grasp to replace it with someone that they cannot even conceive
in order to beat your opposition, you actually have to understand them and be better than them
i don’t see any prominent leftists today going to work at an investment bank like Michael Hudson did at Chase Manhattan under Herman Kahn
hudson actually understands the role finance plays in the domestic and global economy, which is why his critiques actually have merit to them
hudson actually remembers that Marxism isn’t a dogma but a science, something that the left forgets entirely
this is going to be an unpopular answer but no
generally high finance folks are consensus and conservative (i don’t mean this in the political sense to be clear), but are generally very sharp in terms of intellect and thoughtfulness
i would say the overwhelming majority are still very much pro-US (which is natural & to be expected) but will have the honesty to engage in debate about the strengths & weaknesses of the country
TMTLongShort is stupid & should not be considered representive of “high finance,” IMO
