I’m not going to pretend every banned name on this beta was a misunderstood joke. Some people went looking for the line. Fine. Blizzard can enforce a naming policy.
What they cannot do — and what they just did — is treat “the most extreme violations” as a slogan while handing out the same hammer for names that don’t even come close.
Then an email that says “highly offensive language,” no named characters, no rename, no appeal, no refund. Customer Support is explicitly told not to touch it. The development team reviewed it. That’s the whole process.
That last part is the part that matters. A beta is where you find out the dual-name system produces dumb combinations, that filters miss things, that a surname is not a loophole and also not a crime. The adult response is: force the rename, keep the tester, log the miss, ship the filter. The response they chose was: immediate removal from a basically paid test, no path back, and a public reminder that this was for the worst of the worst.
A company that would rather disappear a tester than admit the process is sloppy in a beta. That isn’t moderation. It’s little-fascist admin cosplay: rule first, justify never, and sneer at anyone who asks which word was the crime.
Good luck in November and remember safe names only! So reserve early Lily Sunflower, Bunny Rainbow or Sparkle Meadow. 🤡
