Today, BILD Edmonton Metro brought together leaders from government, economic development and industry for “Building Canada’s Western Defence Hub: Jobs, Investment, and Housing in the Edmonton Region.” The topic comes at an important moment for the Edmonton Metro Region. We’re seeing momentum in population growth, business, investment and talent, while Canada is making significant investments to strengthen its domestic defence industry. With the launch of the Edmonton Region Defence Alliance (ERDA), our region is exploring how it can position itself to attract new defence and security investment — and, importantly, how we prepare our communities for the growth that comes with it. For the building and land development industry, this conversation is about much more than defence. New employers need industrial land, commercial space, transportation networks and housing for the people who will power these businesses. The communities we plan and build today will help create the foundation for tomorrow’s investment, jobs and long-term prosperity. That’s why regional collaboration, thoughtful planning, efficient approvals and infrastructure that keeps pace with growth are so important. We were excited to attend the City of St. Albert’s State of the City, connecting with so many local business owners and community leaders. Our own Sue Keating of Melcor was featured during the Mayor’s tour highlighting some of the region’s incredible business owners. Sue spoke to the importance of great people and strong communities as a central part of St. Albert’s value proposition. We’re excited about the “long runway” Melcor has in St. Albert and the future communities and neighbourhoods that Melcor — alongside fellow business and community partners — will help develop and build. We also appreciated Mayor Olivieri’s remarks about the importance of people in bringing a community’s plans and vision to life. City administration, businesses, residents, and Council all have a role to play in creating places where people can find homes, communities can thrive, and businesses can grow. We look forward to continuing to be an active part of that work and helping build the future of St. Albert.

We shared our concerns with Mayor Knack and members of the Council Services Committee on Item 7.1, “2027 Council and Committee Meeting Calendar,” specifically the proposed change to public hearing scheduling. Under the proposed two-day public hearing model, postponed hearings could face delays of up to a month and a half on average, compared with three weeks or less under the current model. Back in July, we shared our position on the City of Edmonton’s administrative report regarding proposed amendments to Zoning Bylaw 20001 related to lodging houses. Our latest position letter reaffirms our support for the proposed amendments, noting that they represent a balanced and targeted response to concerns surrounding illegally operated lodging houses, while preserving this important housing option within Edmonton’s broader housing spectrum. Our Board Chair, Paul Lanni, was delighted to attend today’s announcement from the Government of @Canada and @YourAlberta, committing to build at least 1,460 affordable housing units across the province. Through Build Canada Homes, the Government of Canada will provide up to $220 million, while Alberta will contribute up to $165 million toward this important investment. We’re thrilled to see this level of investment in our province and commend both governments for stepping up to help meet the urgent need for more affordable homes. Earlier this year, we supported Council’s decision to approve borrowing for servicing the northeast part of St. Albert — opening new capacity to help meet the region’s growing housing needs. We were equally pleased to see federal funding support this important work. 350 homes a year — and a lot of ways to make each one your own. 🏠 We stopped by Cira Homes for a member visit and got a look at the range of work they’re doing, from multifamily and townhomes to fully custom builds. One project that caught our attention was a five-plex in Leduc featuring precast basements with access from both the front and back — something Annie told us is pretty unique in Alberta. On the custom side, flexibility is a big part of the process. Want to move a wall? Add a bathroom? Upgrade finishes? Their team works with homeowners to customize layouts and details, with in-house designers and architects helping bring it all together. No matter the price point, the team emphasized one thing: quality doesn’t go down. Thanks to the Cira Homes team for the tour, the conversation and the hospitality!

What a lovely morning in the Town of @StonyPlainAB! Our very own Jason Syvixay had the opportunity to join Mayor Choy for a special tour of the community. BILD Edmonton Metro supports the general direction of the City’s 2027 Climate Implementation Priorities, while recognizing the importance of thoughtful planning and investment to address climate-related risks. How those priorities are implemented will be critical, particularly where new requirements could affect housing costs and timelines. “The report identifies approximately $257 million in estimated costs associated with the priority actions, including approximately $129 million in actions that are not currently tied to an existing budget request or funding source. Clear prioritization and fiscal discipline are key as the City moves from strategy to implementation.” As the City moves forward, we are encouraging an approach that: - Assesses the cost of new climate-related requirements and their impact on housing affordability and supply - Uses a risk- and evidence-based approach - Considers both upfront and lifecycle costs - Avoids duplicating existing municipal or provincial requirements - Considers cumulative impacts across development requirements - Prioritizes practical, flexible and cost-effective solutions Climate resilience and housing affordability need to be advanced together, with a continued focus on fiscal sustainability, regulatory efficiency and supporting housing supply.
