Austin, TX
Yesterday’s shooting on Guadalupe & 40th illustrates Austin must start enforcing the legal standard for involuntary commitment, and that is being “a danger to yourself and others.” It was an avoidable tragedy.

After Dana White respectfully declines PressSec because it’s not his idea of a good time, Trump’s “second choice” will be a real choice.

Watch this. A meth-addicted street person in Portland will never find peace because the system itself is an enabling cycle.

A gay Gen X-er recently shared this bit of wisdom with me: “It’s easier to be gay in Republican circles than it is to be Republican in gay circles.”

Hatchet is awesome. It turns a scary disaster into a contemplative coming-of-age and figuring-it-out adventure, in visceral prose accessible to a young boy. Luke Winkie offers little defense of the novel, instead attributing its popularity among boys to some kind of conspiracy theory. Slate can go the way of Salon.
The first novel I ever loved was the survival classic Hatchet, but recently I’ve learned that a *lot* of women despise this book, and see it is as something they were forced to read in school to entice the idiot illiterate boys in their English class. I dove into that tension!

Rewatching Avenue 5 and can’t believe they cancelled it after two seasons. The funniest damn writing in a decade of tv. I need more Hugh Laurie.

Presenting Chief of Staff Miller. This is going to be good.
Hi. Want to see a murder on live TV? I give you New White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller vs. Jake Tapper on CNN. Tapper said we need illegals here to pick our crops. Then, Fatality.

Austin is determined to learn the hard way that ICE is a federal law enforcement agency backed by federal law. “Resisting” cooperation is a waste of time and a bad idea for public safety.
Austin leaders are considering changes to how APD interacts with ICE following the midterm. What we know so far: kxan.com/investigations/aust…

Em dashes are overused for parenthetical phrases, but who on Earth mistakes them for a hyphenated word?
Replying to @yunta_tsai
(The rules of English need to change to put spaces between the em dashes, as they presently too much resemble a hyphenated word, rather than a parenthetical phrase. Also, “—“ is an unpleasantly long a line. The en dash, “–“, is a better length.)

This is Bruce. Mentally ill, homeless, and most-recently shot across the street from the state hospital he probably should have been in. #atx
Replying to @brintdavy
Also Bruce after I chased him down the alley.

The deceased man from this morning’s shooting behind Circle K and a gaming repair shop on Guadalupe & 40th was a mentally-ill homeless man named Bruce. Game shop owner @GameRepublik says he’s told council for years that chronic trespassers on his property are a threat to themselves & others. Here’s Bruce:
Bruce the batman comes rumbling down the alley and I have to get the 120 plus arrestee on the record about last nights election. He was disappointed. @ATXVideos #election2026 #austin

Bo French got H-1B fraud wrong—xenophobic targeting of the workers. JD Vance got it right—going after the companies that abused the system for profit.

Was refusing debates a critical campaign error for Paxton and Abbott? Abbott is a very strong debater. Paxton? Not so much. He can argue cases, but debate is a holistic persuasive game.
Greg Abbott did not debate Gina Hinojosa. Ken Paxton refused to debate James Talarico—even after Talarico offered to let Fox News host the debate. Texas Republicans at the top of the ticket were strongly relying on their loyal voters to show up. The same voters that have repeatedly been taken for granted.
