Cell Biology of Early Development, Genome Activation, Membraneless Organelles and Synthetic Biology, from the Good Lab @ Penn. @buenoscience@mstdn.science
Super energized after an awesome student invited seminar visit to UTSW Biophysics hosted by Matt Amato from @JWoodruffLab. Student led JC, lunch, coffee hour and dinner. Inspiring stuff! And nice to see colleagues and friends @HenneLab@bsabari@biophysics_utsw
And we’re off! Global Summit on Synthetic Cells at SIAT. With global leaders from US, Europe and Asia together in fabulous Shenzhen. I am amped! @KateAdamala@cees_dekker@SchwilleLab#SynCell
Invigorating seminar visit to U. Michigan MCDB @UMich_MCDB@UMengineering hosted by friends Ann Miller and Allen Liu. A beautiful time to be in Ann Arbor!
Bucket list checked. Hosted Magdalena @ZernickaGoetz for a fabulous seminar on embryo self organization and development. Inspiring work for the RG Williams lecture @PennMedicine
Gripping, elevated science and hiking in Les Diablerets for ‘24 IDP GRC. @GrcIdp . Thanks Tanja @TanjaMittag & Birthe @BBKrage for organizing
Learned a ton. Saw beautiful Switzerland, west to east
Great glacier hike with new friends Pilong Li, Yi Lin, Danfeng Cai @DanfengCai
Inspiring Juneteenth lecture at Penn by Freeman Hrabowski III. Important words about purpose and inclusion in science. @CAMBUpenn@PennCDB
Nice intro by Penn’s own HHMI Hrabowski scholar @MustafaMir16
To make sense of the mutants we turned to @JeetainMittal, whose computational simulations helped reveal that the balance of homotypic and heterotypic interactions determine whether two IDPs will co-partition
Although FUS LC leverages Tyr and Arg to interact, similar to rules for LAF-1 RGG, adding Tyr to FUS LC did not promote co-partitioning but instead appeared to strengthen its homotypic interactions and ability to condense
We started the project interested in whether pairs of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) could form discrete condensed phases in vitro and in cells. We found that the LAF-1 RGG domain and FUS low complexity (LC) domain formed spatially distinct compartments
Very excited to co-host a subgroup today at ASCB mtg on ‘Biological Size Control and Scaling’ with Hui Chen, Jan Skotheim. Mon Dec 4, from 3:30-6p in Rm 205b. Come hear about the amazing work from our presenters! #CellBio23. @hui_chen2@JanSkotheim@GaronaAna@MarcoFumasoni
The Good lab is excited to be at ASCB-EMBO CellBio23 meeting in Boston! Come check out our research and say hi. Attending: @MVGarabedian, @WenchaoQian, @hui_chen2
Incredible lab art collabo from Holly Ramage Lab at Thomas Jefferson U., Dept of Micro and Immuno. @ramagelab@TJU_Micro@JeffersonUniv . Piece Titled "Calabaza de los muertos"
Really fun seminar visit at @Pitt_Chemistry. An ecclectic day of chemical biology and model organisms and a awesome dinner with friends Alex Deiters, Lance Davidson and Seth Childers. @ChildersLab@mechmorpho. And great to see @lab_zhang at CMU
Fashionable goodbye to a wonderful lab manager Rachel @rmwelles who will be dearly missed. She is going to do great things as a PhD student at @CAMBUpenn
Next time you are in Pasadena visit Mission Liquors. They have 2-3 aisles of mescals. I like most bottlings from Pierde Almas. Try a Tobala from Del Maguey or another producer
My lab enjoyed JC paper from @NVastenhouw on how Nanog condensates organize transcriptional bodies at miR-430 loci in early development. doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2022.1…. Published a few months ago and worth a read! Thx @WenchaoQian for presenting.
Another great talk from Good lab PhD student @WenchaoQian on embryo size and ZGA gradients. And a visit from @LendertGelens who built the OG embryo temperature controller!
My lab is amped for #ASCB2022 in Washington DC. We have talks from @MVGarabedian Sat 9:45 am (Rm 207B), @WenchaoQian Sun 3:45 pm (Rm 207B). And posters throughout. Looking forward to discussion!
Had a blast celebrating with former and current Good Lab members and collaborators, including @TheHammerLab . Very grateful to work with an awesome group of young scientists and to have such creative and supportive colleagues!
Part 4. We synthesize the findings into a waddington landscape relating spatial position, division rate, and cell size threshold for ZGA, controlling the dynamics of genome activation in the blastula and early cell fating. Shows why Xenopus is so useful for this study!
We had too many things to celebrate - passing quals, papers, new lab members, etc - we had to get together with our buds @ramagelab. Thanks @DockStreetBeer
Paola's PNAS paper is now online. Great collaboration with Percec lab (Penn) to load hydrophobic drugs, protein and DNA aptamer cargo onto versatile and rugged vesicles.
