Philosophy, theology, history, rhetoric must survive. But academia as it exists today must not be propped up forever. There are exceptions--but overall it has totally lost sight of its purpose.
The academic world is a breeding ground for nonsense, vainglory, ideological corruption, and diseducation. Esp in those departments where the rubber never has to meet the road.
That's why we have whole civilizations of people that believe the rubber must never meet the road.

I love philosophy and many unprofitable fields. And I love many people that work in those departments.
Doing philosophy is a more noble and worthwhile thing than writing code, that's for sure.
That doesn't change my opinion on the matter of loans at all.

I got a full ride to get a degree in philosophy and then taught myself how to code after graduation and have had a career doing that ever since.

A lot of unprofitable departments churn out people that can only work in those same unprofitable departments.

My son broke his arm today so I took him out for ice cream and said he could get a LEGO set and we could build it together.
We went to Walmart.
Every single LEGO set, even ones that were $7.99, were locked up behind glass.
We walked down another isle… same thing.
Every single week I have walked in here and more items are locked up behind glass and it takes FOREVER to have anyone help you open something and they make you feel awful for it.
It’s honestly barely worth shopping here at all…
I felt so bad for my kid. We ended up just leaving without a LEGO set.
Whatever we are doing with society that has brought us here… it’s gotta end.
This is insane and it’s destroying childhood.
