12 years ago today was the hardest and longest day of my life.
It's the day I said "thanks for being my dad".
1am in China and I see that my phone, which is on silent so I can sleep, has 22 missed calls from my wife and mom.
My dad was recovering from a medical mistake and he took a devastating and hard turn, it was really bad. 3 taxi rides to get back to the Hong Kong border, a taxi to the airport, flight to LA then southwest to Oakland and on to slc - he held on to life waiting for me to arrive and all of his 9 children had half an hour with him.
Because of the time change by the time I got home to Sacramento that night I'd had a 39 hour long day with 6 flights and the hardest experience of my life.
How do I honor a legend like my dad:
I try to be the best father I can. I'll call my daughters, I've sent an email to my missionary son and chatted with my high school boys.
I'll try to be the best husband possible.
I'll look for others. My dad was activated by a great scoutmaster, I'll see those on the margins and try and lift them up.
I'll follow my Savior so I end up where my dad went.
I'll call my mom and my siblings today. I've sent them all a digitized version of dad's scriptures with all of his notes.
I'll try to be happy. My dad wants me to be happy.
If you've read this far, call your dad and tell him you love him, or your mom, child, friend, anybody. Life is precious and goes by fast.
