ALT FRESCO OF A SATYR CARRYING A CHILD, FROM THE VILLA OF NUMISIA PROCULA, C. 150 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS This detached Roman wall painting depicts a satyr striding against a plain white background while carrying a child, perhaps the infant Dionysus or a satyriskos, a child satyr, on his shoulders. The satyr holds a curved shepherd's crook in his right hand and wears an animal skin draped over his left arm. Originally, isolated floating figures like this were painted in coloured frames on the upper registers of the walls of wealthy residences, in order to create an illusion of airy lightness. However, early excavators routinely cut these individual vignettes out of their walls, destroying the surrounding spatial context. This fragment was rehoused in the Gallery of Candelabra in 1883, severing the intended connection between the artistic detail and the immersive decorative experience of the villa.

ALT ANCIENT RELIEF DECORATION ON THE FAÇADE OF THE CASINO DELL'AURORA, 1611. PALAZZO PALLAVICINI ROSPIGLIOSI The crisp, deeply carved classical reliefs embedded across this structure represent a masterful and highly cynical use of architectural salvage. Cardinal Scipione Borghese used this garden and pavilion as a party space. The spolia decoration of this façade has a strong propagandistic tilt. The panel above the right-hand grated window details the flaying of Marsyas, a potent myth where Apollo defeats a satyr in a musical contest and punishes him severely to assert divine power. Other reliefs, like the large panel over the central arch featuring triumphant Dionysiac figures, are also pressed into service: what's a party without wine? These reliefs, referring to episodes in the myth of Apollo, god of the sun and of the arts, serve to make Apollo a stand-in for the corpulent prelate. Antiquities here have nothing to do with their original funerary context. Leave your troubles outside!
