California Assemblywoman Mia Bonta collected a six-figure 501(c)3 nonprofit salary while her husband Attorney General Rob Bonta steered more than half a million dollars to the groups that employed her. She allegedly used these funds to purchase multiple Gucci bags.
That is not a rumor from a random account. CalMatters documented it years ago. While Rob Bonta sat in the Assembly, he solicited $517,500 in behested payments for nonprofits that paid his wife. The bulk was a $500,000 Google grant to Bring Me a Book, where she was a top executive. He also sent $21,000 in campaign cash to Literacy Lab while she was CEO there, then more money to Oakland Promise after she took that CEO job. They got letters saying the funds would not go to her salary. That is how you know the conflict was obvious.
Bob Stern, who helped write California’s Political Reform Act, said the law should be changed so politicians cannot do this. The law was not changed. Rob became Attorney General. Mia took Rob’s Assembly seat. She later chaired the budget subcommittee that oversees his Department of Justice.
Then she wrote AB 2624, the bill nicknamed the Stop Nick Shirley Act, after reporters started digging into the same family money trail.
He asks donors with business before the state to fund her nonprofits. She draws the paycheck. He becomes the state’s top cop. She writes a law that makes it harder to put cameras on the network.
That is not public service. That is a corrupt family business.

McDonald's is spending 8.5 billion dollars to find out why families stopped coming.
I can save them the 8.5 billion.
They took out the playground.
The plan, announced Wednesday at investor day. Better food, faster service, new equipment, AI tools, hospitality training, and a bigger push into chicken and beverages. They call it Next. The goal, they say, is making customers feel more comfortable.
Wall Street loved it so much the stock fell 5 percent to its lowest since 2022.
Over five years McDonald's shares are down 3 percent. Burger King's parent is up 14. The owner of Taco Bell and KFC is up 13.
This is not a hamburger problem. This is a McDonald's problem.
So let us talk about who used to eat there.
Parents. That was the whole business. Parents at 5:40 on a Tuesday with three kids in the back and nothing thawed at home.
You did not go for the burger. You went because your kids could run screaming through a plastic tube for 40 minutes while you sat with a coffee and experienced silence.
That was the product. The food was the cover charge.
The first PlayPlace opened in 1971 in Birmingham, Alabama, and for fifty years it did one job. It made small children demand to go to McDonald's.
Then 2020 arrived, every play area in the country closed, and a great many never came back. The equipment came out during a remodeling program named Experience of the Future.
The Experience of the Future turned out to be a touchscreen.
Their own chief executive said he did not know if ball pits were in their future.
Sir, you were not selling ball pits. You were selling forty minutes.
So now there is no counter, no playground, and no reason for a seven year old to want to go. A screen, a window, and a bag.
And for that we pay prices that require a moment of reflection in the parking lot.
For thin, overcooked, oddly uniform pucks that taste like a memory of beef.
I did not love them because they were good. I loved them because I was eight and there was a slide.
And have you seen the new buildings.
The old ones were unmistakable. Red roof, yellow arches, legible from a highway at 70 to a child who could not yet read.
The new ones are a flat gray box with a small logo and a drive through wrapped around it. A regional claims office with a fryer.
They removed the color, the characters, the counter, and the playground, and then hired consultants to find out why it no longer feels like anywhere.
Which is why, when I have to eat fast food, I go to Chick-fil-A.
Not for the politics. For the competence.
They have led the customer satisfaction index for fast food eleven years running, and average 8.5 million dollars per location against McDonald's 4 million.
More than double, while closed on Sundays. Fifty two days a year with the lights off, and still double.
A seventeen year old hands you a bag and says my pleasure and means it about 70 percent, which is 70 percent more than a touchscreen has managed.
McDonald's is spending 8.5 billion on hospitality training.
Chick-fil-A earns 8.5 million per restaurant by just having some.
So here is my consulting proposal, free of charge, on behalf of mothers everywhere.
Put the playgrounds back.
Not a nostalgia campaign. Not a retro cup. The structure. Tubes, slides, a door the kids cannot open from the inside, and a bench where a tired woman can sit.
And understand what you are buying, because it is not lunch.
A six year old does not know your food is bad. He has no basis for comparison and no functioning palate. He thinks the burger is incredible because he is standing in a castle made of tubes.
That is the window. That is the only window you get.
You catch them before the taste buds arrive, and thirty years later they drive past your sign, feel something they cannot explain, and pull in anyway.
That is not a menu strategy. That is imprinting, and you shut it down in 2020 to save on cleaning.
Eight and a half billion dollars for AI tools and hospitality training.
Or a slide.

Ok, I tried the viral menu hack called Cookie McDouble hack. This was a proper culinary odyssey so I feel the need to report in depth.
Look and Feel:
o Surprisingly, the cookie blends pretty well with the rest of the burger. The dough color is close to the inside of the color of the bun, and the chocolate chips brings warm and depth colors not so different from the beef patties. For some it will feel a bit too much like a sea of sameness, but others will like its consistent look. If you look at it fast enough, it’s easy to miss the cookie in there. You may want to push it forward towards you, so you get more of it first bite.
o The build is pretty balanced, so it stays in place quite easily. The fact you must order it plain also helps with keeping everything together vs having the ketchup/mustard/onion making everything slide. It does not require holding the burger any different way you would do for a Double or Triple Cheeseburger, but I did inadvertently press the top bun a bit too strong when I assembled it.
Assembly:
o Extremely easy to do if you put the cookie between the bottom bun and the first beef patty, or right below the top bun. In that regard, it’s pretty smart because ease of assembly matters so that it does not become too much of a barrier to try. There’s an alternate option putting the cookie between the two patties and this is where things get messy as you need to separate the two patties and they’re full of melted cheese. I am actually not sure I would recommend this, as you want the chocolate to be closer to the source of beef taste and to the source of warmth, so the chocolate can slightly melt.
o I really, really recommend removing mustard, ketchup, onions. Regarding pickles, I tried but keeping them was not for me (it's the second burger in the back of the picture). I preferred without. But I am not necessarily the biggest fan of pickles anyway so I would not take that comment in consideration if you’re a pickle fanatic.
Overall taste:
o It definitely feels like unknown territory when you get your first bite. There’s an additional gentle and quiet crunch mid-bite that feels different from the 100% softness you usually get from the juicy patty and melted cheese in the Double Cheeseburger.
o I did not enjoy so much the “peripheral” bites or edge bites (I am sorry, I am not a native English speaker and I can’t find a better way to explain it). I guess it’s due to the fact these edge bites get more dough than chocolate. So, when and if you try it, I highly encourage pushing at least to the second bite to form your final opinion on the beast.
o The second bite is bringing more chocolate notes forward. As it gets in contact with the warmth of the beef patty, it gets melty and deliciously soft, like if the cookie came straight from the oven. This is for me where the “magic” started to happen. But let me be clear: I would not say I was surprised by how much I liked it. I was definitely surprised by how much I liked it versus what I expected (I am going to be honest I thought I would hate it). I did some quick research and I see there’s actually a lot of expert literature around why chocolate and meat can be a powerful culinary match, which I ignored until today.
o What was most interesting for me was probably not the taste itself (which is surely an “acquired taste”), but the feeling that I had never tasted anything quite like it before. Most hacks merge expected taste and texture together but this felt more like an entirely new creation. Uncharted territory, particularly for a French like me who grew up with more classical and expected combinations of taste and food.
Verdict:
Am I glad I tried it? Absolutely. Particularly because it was created by fans. Would I have it again? Unsure, but that's a personal preference. I was confused at first but now I get why people would/could like it.
On my side, I believe the only thing that can beat the original taste of a double cheeseburger is a triple cheeseburger. And there are just other hacks I have more appetite for, like the Crunchy Double (4 McNuggets with barbeque sauce under the patties of a Double Cheese), the hashbrown inside the Egg McMuffin and the other hack that I can’t say the name of.
That’s it. It was awesome to try. Sorry this was a long read. Don’t hesitate to send me your McDonald’s menu hacks, always happy to try.
