Young people in Malawi, many of them teen mothers and former child brides, are leading change, from improving school attendance rates to helping change community opinions on girls’ education. CODE and FAWEMA’s iHEARD project, co-funded by @CanadaDev met the initiative of young people themselves and, together, produced change that reached from individual lives into the wider community. At 11 years old, Grace started school in Grade 1, years behind where she should have been. This summer, she graduated high school, one of the first girls from CODE and @wecarelib's GALI project to reach that milestone. She sat down with our board member Rachel to talk about how far she's come. Watch her tell her own story. 🎥👇youtube.com/watch?v=jsCa_khQ…

Today is International #LiteracyDay, and @UNESCO_DG Khalid El-Enany said it best: "we reaffirm literacy as a fundamental human right and a powerful force for transforming lives, economies and societies." In Liberia, Grace is proof of what that looks like in practice. One of the first students to come through CODE and @wecarelib's GALI program, she recently graduated high school. A powerful milestone that started with learning to read. Join us in celebrating literacy today, and every day. 📖🩵🚀

This #InternationalWomensDay, meet Mtendere, a 13-year-old student in Malawi who dreams of becoming a teacher so she can help others learn to read and write. Girls like Mtendere face barriers that have nothing to do with ability and everything to do with circumstance. When girls are given the chance to learn, they help shape stronger futures for their communities.

In Ghana’s mining communities, many children face the difficult choice between school and unsafe work. Through our Reading Ghana Western Region program, CODE and partners are helping change that, reaching 12,500 students across 37 schools. This year, 296 teachers strengthened their literacy instruction skills, classrooms were filled with culturally relevant books, and Grade 5 reading comprehension scores increased by 15% in project schools. On #InternationalMotherLanguageDay, we’re reminded that language is more than communication; it carries culture, strengthens community, and preserves identity across generations. This year’s theme reminds us that youth are not just learners but co-creators and designers of multilingual education — both in the classroom and at home. When mother languages are valued and supported, learning becomes more inclusive, engaging, and empowering.

As #IDW2026 comes to a close, we’re reminded why CODE’s work matters, and why it matters now. In a world where cooperation and shared norms are under strain, what we build today in classrooms and communities shapes the stability, opportunity, and security of tomorrow. Canada has long been a leader in international education. Stepping back is not neutral, it leaves space for others to set priorities that don’t reflect our values. When we pair principle with pragmatism, education remains one of the strongest tools we have for shared progress. Thank you to all who make this work possible.

This #IDW2026, we’re celebrating the impact of our GALI program in Liberia, where 82% of girls were promoted mid-year, putting them on track to reach an age-appropriate grade in just one school year. When girls are given the tools, support, and encouragement to catch up, they don’t just stay in school; they thrive. #LiteracyMatters #AidWorks
27
During #IDW2026, we’re celebrating how education can advance the values Canada is known for, inclusion, equality, and dignity. By working with local partners to strengthen access to learning, especially for girls, CODE is helping communities thrive and creating lasting impact rooted in shared values.

In Tanzania, national data shows that 61% of students aged 10–14 struggle to read a simple text. But in CODE-supported schools, 84% of Grade 3 students can read and comprehend grade-level material, a powerful shift. This #IDW2026, we celebrate what’s possible when educators are supported, classrooms are resourced, and every child is given the chance to become a reader. #AidWorks #LiteracyMatters

On #InternationalDayOfEducation, we’re reminded that education is more than a right, it’s the foundation for possibility, progress, and equity. At CODE, we believe every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.
