Britain’s commitment to Nato’s 5% spending target will be among the talking points Trump is expected to raise in their first face-to-face meeting at the UN General Assembly, @Telegraph understands.
The meeting comes after Chancellor John Healey declined to commit Britain to spending three per cent of GDP on defence by 2030 in his first Budget.
Defence spending has become one of Trump’s biggest concerns about Britain and Europe.
Burnham, who has twice spoken to the president by phone, is expected to use the meeting to reset Downing Street’s relationship with the White House.

Lord Mandelson was targeted by a scammer impersonating Susie Wiles a year before Andy Burnham.
Mandelson, then Britain's ambassador to DC, was contacted by a person purporting to be Donald Trump's chief of staff in a text message last year.
Wiles’s office confirmed the message was bogus and warned the British Embassy to ignore it, @Telegraph can disclose.
Yet a year later, Burnham was targeted by someone again impersonating Wiles.
It is not clear whether it was the same person, but it raises questions about why the earlier warning failed to prevent a repeat of the scam.
British and American spy agencies are now investigating why Burnham was contacted by the scammer soon after he took office.
