i like to this llms are the birth, not the death, of software because talented ppl like designer here will bang out the best meal tracking app in the world simply because he can now prompt his taste into existence.
by far my favorite use of jev in Ore is predicting what meal i'm going to log next.
i haven't had to manually log a meal in 3 days.

"art is knowing when to stop"
llms have no sense of when enough is enough. a common mistake is assuming over-engineering ("oh wow it built all that w one prompt") as desirable. while def impressive, it is not how you arrive at delight.
when eng time compresses 10x, thinking becomes the bottleneck. not re: more features (that's just bloat) but crafting a world class experience. the cadence then becomes: high quality judgment meeting signal (users).

the way i stop myself from committing this hideous crime is by rewarding myself w gear over time.
eg tennis:
- beginner racket at 2mo of consistent play
- bag and gear at 6mo.
- intermediate racquet at 1yr mark
don’t be the first timer in anything with $1k worth of gear
Gear acquisition syndrome, and how buying (or posting) the thing gives our brain a similar sensation to actually doing it.

llms increase the value of product people because the tangible got cheap whereas the intangible is as rare as ever. the trap is mistaking shipping alone for progress.
the most underrated hire right now is a great product person.
when i say product person i'm def not talking about a product manager. perhaps i think there has to be somewhat of a new role. i don't have a good name for it yet but maybe something like "product thinker".. someone with an intuitive grasp of the product as it exists, where it's soft, where it sings, & how to iterate it toward something even sharper. in some sense, this person has to cohesively hold in their head where this product should be 2 years from now & work backwards from that.
i say this cuz when building was hard, engineering was the bottleneck & the status hierarchy often reflected that. building is no longer hard. which means the variance in outcomes has shifted almost entirely to judgment on what to build, how to sequence it, & how to talk about it.
& the story matters as much as the thing. internally, it organizes the team around a shared model of why. externally, it shapes the interpretive frame users bring to their first experience. you can't retrofit narrative onto a product & expect it to land, it has to be load bearing from the start.
the rarest version of this person sits at the intersection of culture & deep technology. someone genuinely bilingual. they know what's technically possible & they know which cultural currents are real vs. ephemeral. that combo is what separates products that feel inevitable from products that feel assembled.
before ppl clap back with this person has always been valuable, i know.. i am just saying now they might be the most *important* person in the room. their value compounds like never before.

llm builders are speed running evergreen product wisdom: nobody notices a world class product, they just never hit friction. buttery smooth ux is a thousand details you never had to see.

good tweet. my sense is that the v1 of ai ux was frontier lab chats. v2 is superb ux with a a custom harness behind it. anything outside of the biz model incentives of the big labs is up for grabs.
Using custom agents/harnesses today feels like using an ethereum wallet in 2015 (h/t @js_horne) janky, brittle, but also, magic.
Most people still use AI exactly as they did in 2023. Huge opportunities to get people to magic agent ux faster (e.g. phantom, privy in this analogy)
