No, it's not communism. It's routine grid conservation advice during heat emergencies to avoid blackouts. NYC emergency plans and Con Ed have long recommended setting AC no lower than 78°F. Republican Mayor Bloomberg did the same in 2006—he urged conservation, turned off City Hall AC, and shifted city facilities to generators. Giuliani also called for energy conservation on hot days to prevent brownouts. Practical safety measure, not ideology.

As Gun Violence Awareness month ends and we begin Jaime's birthday month, we reflect on the past 8 1/2 years. It is so hard to believe that so much time has passed, yet time also feels as if it has stood still. Jaime is forever 14 while her friends have graduated from high school, college, and are now moving on in their adult lives. It remains impossible to explain the impact that gun violence has on everyone in the family affected and how far that impact reaches for all others who knew them or have simply followed along with their stories. Please think about Jaime a little extra this month. Do something kind in her honor. Be a good person. As we have done the past few years, we will be providing "Blessing Bags" to those who are homeless or simply in need. The bags filled with snacks, drinks, and toiletries will include an inspirational note in hopes to lift someone's spirits, because that is what Jaime would have wanted. She understood that not everyone was as fortunate and she eagerly tried to help. Democracy is not a spectator sport. It requires active engagement. Today, I was honored to champion @SenBenAllen’s bill, SB 1301, to stop insurance companies from dropping policyholders without notice and sufficient opportunity to cure. SB 1301 passed out of the CA Assembly Insurance Committee 💪! On to the Appropriations Committee and then @CAgovernor’s desk. Prior to the LA fires, insurers cancelled or nonrenewed policies of numerous residents without advance notice or explanation, and without providing any opportunity to remediate any conditions that might have been the basis for the nonrenewal. As a result, folks were forced onto the CA FAIR Plan (supposedly, the insurer of last resort), with insufficient coverage. Our town experienced it first-hand, but this is an issue of critical importance to every CA resident. We are one major step closer toward ending unfair nonrewals in California.
