In the years after World War I, before Friedrich Hayek read Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis, he had been sympathetic to democratic socialism. Ludwig von Mises’ 1922 book changed everything: "To none of us young men who read the book when it appeared was the world ever the same again," Hayek later acknowledged. Mises had delivered a devastatingly persuasive criticism of socialism, centring on the Economic Calculation Problem. He argued that a rational economy relies entirely on market prices to determine the value of resources, machinery, and labour. Because socialism abolishes private ownership of the means of production, it destroys the markets where these goods are bought and sold. Without markets, there are no prices; without prices, central planners cannot calculate profit, loss, or resource scarcity. Consequently, a socialist state is economically blind, leaving planners unable to know whether they are creating wealth or wasting resources. But Mises also provided a sweeping sociological critique, framing capitalism as a consumer democracy where everyday spending by individuals directs production, while socialism replaces consumer choice with bureaucratic dictate. Mises and Hayek would go on to share a mentor-protege relationship and lifelong intellectual partnership that formed the backbone of the 20th-century Austrian School of Economics, co-founding the Österreichisches Institut für Konjunkturforschung in 1927 and the Mont Pelerin Society in 1947, uniting classical liberals to oppose collectivism. Both men left behind unrivalled legacies in the championing of individual liberty and free markets and helped reshape modern political economic theory.
