Very interesting meeting with the Swedish farmers union in Brussels today. In 1995 they were 90% self sufficient in home grown food. Swedish Govt introduced higher welfare standards and their self sufficiency has fallen to 50%. Gap filled by food produced to lower standards.

Hmm. Is @thetimes picture editor at it again with an image of...cotton harvest...? to illustrate a story about farming and the environment in the UK? 🤔 Worth noting that farmers who aren’t compliant with certain environmental measures already lose subsidy.
