In the last week I’ve had dozens of conversations - inc with some of the most ‘progressive’, nature friendly farmers in England - all of whom are despairing of the chaos @UKLabour has unleashed & are talking of being forced to intensify production to try & make ends meet.

This is an absolute outrage. Farmers lose 76% of their basic payment this year and now can’t get into SFI to compensate. The large landowners will already be in schemes, so it’s hill farmers and others below minimum wage who suffer. Don’t we care about food security and nature?
BREAKING: Defra to stop taking new applications for the #SFI24 scheme. Every penny will be paid to farmers with existing agreements & outstanding eligible applications will be taken forward. Yet another hammer blow for farmers. @NFUtweets @NFUPress @CLAtweets @tenantfarmers

“It a paradigm shift from ‘I farm this land until I choose to sell it’ to ‘I farm this land until the government choose to take it’. It’s daylight robbery”
“If you care, care now, not ten years in the future when it’s all gone. We need your support now”. Making no apologies for how cutting and clear my commentary is. @DefraGovUK @SteveReedMP @RachelReevesMP @Keir_Starmer do the right thing. You are ruining our country.

Shocking news for the sector. Clearly @defra and @HMRCgovuk have little understanding of today's economics of sustainable UK food production or environmental land management for "public good" or the current fragility of many farming business and the rural businesses around them
“Another shattering blow to English farms delivered” NFU President Tom Bradshaw (@ProagriLtd) comments after Defra announced, that it is no longer accepting new applications for SFI24 as of today.  Read more👉 ow.ly/9RZ350Vg3GY

Small farmers in the Uk are being driven to the wall - first through the removal of the old single farm payments and now with the end of the SFI environmental scheme - the damage to families and rural communities will be deep and permanent.

Farm business confidence has reached historically low levels, bypassing the record lows set last year, and this all before Defra delivered another hammer blow to farmers through the closure of SFI applications last night. Read more👉nfuonline.com/updates-and-in… #BackBritishFarming

The attack on farmers is an attack on you, the great British 🇬🇧 public. 1- inheritance tax =no food 2- compulsory farm land purchase = no food 3- SFI schemes stopping =no food And so much more. For a nation attempting to become net zero, taking away the greenest parts of the country? Nonsense

I am seriously concerned for the mental well being of the farming community @SteveReedMP @DanielZeichner Is our landscape, our food and our environment and those who undertake the vital work not as important as the rest? We feel totally disregarded @Mather_Keir

The Government's decision to close the SFI scheme last night, with absolutely no warning, is a disaster for our farmers, our environment, and our food security. In the House of Commons this afternoon, I urged the Farming Minister to think again.

Can anyone explain to me why any of us should engage with government on the land use framework? They want to tax us higher Take away all production support Not pay for environmental restoration Take the side of corporates Compulsory purchase land cheap And favour other land uses

Time for a legal challenge? Website said 6 weeks notice of closure - who will ever trust Government again. A sad day for the environment and sad day for family farms.

Deeply disappointing news. This will have serious impacts on industry's transition to net zero ⬇️
A few words on the massive consequences of govt suspending applications to the Sustainable Farming Incentive last night. A disaster not only for farm businesses & the rural economy, but also food security & our nature & climate targets.

It’s not just farming and food production at stake here, years of helping and working with nature, wildlife and the environment will suffer. This vindictive, spiteful government just don’t like the country side. They want a fight? By heck they have one now. @itvcalendar @horton_official @BethRigby @MartinDaubney @StephSpyro @DailyMailUK @guardian @FarmersWeekly @NoFarmsNoFoods @farmers
