During the Covid pandemic epidemiologist considered Trump a comorbidity much like asthma or diabetes. In reality, Trump functioned as a political comorbidity: a condition that, once present, raised the odds of dying. He minimized the virus and spread falsehoods about masks, testing, treatments, and the death toll, and that discouraged the precautions that save lives.
The evidence is concrete. In a 2020 peer-reviewed analysis, veteran CDC epidemiologist Robert Hahn estimated that Trump's early dismissal of masks alone may account for roughly 4,000 to 12,000 deaths. He noted openly that the figure depends on how much mask avoidance Trump's words caused. A Columbia University analysis that October found 130,000 to 210,000 U.S. deaths avoidable relative to peer nations like Canada and Germany, and it cited failures of policy, implementation, and leadership. Later excess-mortality research showed the official count was low. How much of that falls on presidential messaging is still debated.
Trump didn't cause the virus. He made it deadlier.
