This article misses the forest for the trees: the hype for “transferable skills” undermines the *major.* You can pick up little nibbles of “skills” here and there in gen ed. Either the humanities command intellectual prestige on their own or they don’t. If they don’t, it’s over.

Problem is that this worldliness didn’t prevent it from adapting to changing times in different places in the past. The other problem is that the “adapting to the times” is written all over contemporary Islam.
I wonder if Islam has issues with "adapting to the times" because its main holy text was a lot more "worldly" in the issues it addressed (divorce, inheritance, how to slaughter animals, etc) whereas with the Bible, its murkiness allows for much more flexibility in interpretation

Anyone in the US under 30 should be forgiven for not knowing about the legislative branch, and therefore thinking that 1) “politics” ultimately refers to executive actions and court opinions, and 2) that “political discussion” is properly reducible to individual personalities.

In the absence of mass political parties (and especially with the federal legislative branch defunct) there’s little to analyzing US “politics” other than figuring out which neuroses tend to orbit around which opinions and patronage networks. Total absorption into culture.
