Great perspective from @DhruvKhullar in @NEJM on how the doom & gloom around economic displacement for physicians may be overhyped. My quick take *I think the public conversation now overestimates the complexity in clinical care, esp hospital care, that can be automated. But I think AI will eventually have a transformative effect in medicine but on a much longer time horizon than the AI optimists would have us believe *While AI may generate more clinical demand, it's only an assumption that more humans will be needed to fulfill that demand *The O-ring argument says an error at any step can undermine the whole process. That makes accuracy, reliability and fidelity essential. But It doesn’t establish who provides it best: clinicians, AI, or both. It could be that even essential human oversight could be provided by fewer clinicians. I think the biggest barrier to AI generated economic displacement broadly is cultural. The public, at least now, seems to be united in opposition. What are the AI predictions getting right—and wrong—about your specialty?
