Im not sure this happens beyond over optimistic planning stages now with google maps being basically the only source of directions
But back in map quest or AAA map days, it could be very easy to over look route times or just get something so generic it could be possible
I am always confused by anecdotes like this. Are there substantial sums of people who don't look up how long a journey will be before they start driving?
