Should we tolerate the intolerant? There is no denying that Britain is more divided than ever before. Sectarianism has taken root, inflaming community tensions and being further emboldened by the Government’s decision to implement a de facto Islamic blasphemy law. We also appear to have lost the art of debating and disagreeing agreeably. At the Battle of Ideas, FSU Director of Case Management and author of Island of Strangers, @BenBarryJones, will join an important panel discussion examining whether we can tolerate the intolerant. The session will seek to answer some key questions: to what extent should a society tolerate groups that themselves promote intolerance? US scraps UN free speech declaration after insufficient support On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Trump administration sought to promote international free speech protections. However, the event was cancelled after too few countries committed to signing the declaration. Britain was among the countries that failed to attend the signing ceremony. The declaration denounced “new laws” and “regulatory frameworks” that endanger free speech. It is clear that the UK and the EU objected to the document because it conflicts with their censorious online regimes, including the Online Safety Act and the EU’s Digital Services Act. Governments would have been required to agree that online platforms should not be forced to “proactively moderate content” falling within certain categories of speech. Sarah Rogers, the US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, said: “The statement is intended as an expression of comity and common values, and also a source of interpretive guidance for American speech companies complying with overseas laws.” A State Department spokesman said that the draft joint statement was “undergoing an iterative diplomatic process”, adding: “The purpose of this effort is to drive consensus, provide clarity and express shared values. By its terms, the statement does not purport to override existing laws or regulations.” It is deeply disappointing that countries around the world cannot commit to defending one of our most basic rights. 🚨 WEST MIDLANDS POLICE THREATENED CHILD WITH ARREST OVER TIKTOK VIDEO SHE VIEWED. The UK is in the midst of a free speech crisis. Anyone who denies it is kidding themselves. Last year, a video went viral showing two West Midlands Police officers turning up at a teenage girl’s house over a TikTok video featuring a teacher, with negative comments, alleging that she had committed a malicious communications offence. The girl was told to hand over her devices or face arrest. Her mother agreed to a voluntary interview, but the case was later dropped and no further action was taken. Most shockingly, the police did not even check the IP address, which would have immediately shown that the girl was not responsible. They later identified another child, who was also subjected to no further action. After the video went viral, the force attempted to justify its actions with a ridiculous statement describing the incident as “incredibly serious”. The statement was eventually taken down, but there has been no correction or apology for what was a false allegation. The fact that police can turn up at your door and seize your devices over a TikTok video is testament to the free speech crisis in the UK. Muslim activists have attempted to cancel national treasure John Cleese, demanding that the comedian be “cancelled” over so-called ‘Islamophobia’. The Free Speech Union stands squarely with @JohnCleese and his right to free speech. Parliament voted to abolish blasphemy laws in 2008 — 18 years ago. A group called “Deenified” released a video attacking the Fawlty Towers star for ‘using your platform to attack Islam’ and called for his Birmingham show — part of a nationwide tour — to be banned. The activist accused Cleese of ‘spreading dangerous misinformation and creating hostility against Muslims’. Once again, the term ‘misinformation’ is being weaponised to silence those who do not subscribe to the prevailing narrative. The activist said of Cleese and his comments: ‘That’s hate speech and you’re just a hate preacher’. The Islamic website 5Pillars also suggested that demands for Cleese’s Birmingham show to be cancelled could be replicated in other cities with ‘substantial Muslim communities’. Fortunately, John’s show went ahead without incident. We must not let an Islamic blasphemy law take root in Britain. It is not a crime to criticise, debate or mock any religion in the UK.
