That's your question. That isn't the only function of cultural production. This can exist and what you are saying still exist. I live an hour away from there and could easily never go or be interested in the programming and still think it's good for the city.
Replying to @eli1ah
the question is whether it supports vital, autonomous cultural life on its own terms, or only insofar as it serves a brand/marketplace--- culture and commerce are connected, but keeping them distinct surely matters (analytically, philosophically, politically)... like, people need spaces to gather and make meaning whose value doesn’t depend on their usefulness to a company/market/shareholders. i find this trivially true and not particularly hard to grasp.

Not replacement. Additive. How is a place artists are working and getting paid not cultural infrastructure?
Replying to @eli1ah
Wait do you think this brand activation is a net-good replacement for actual culture spaces? Again its avowedly built as a content-capture studio first and a show space second, and it sits inside a luxury retail/residential complex Again, I think it’s just a basic category error to confuse what they’re building here for cultural infrastructure

How do you want the companies that have the distribution for our music to participate in culture? Where do you want people behind the scenes to work, get paid well and have employee benefits + equity? If the independent venues are closing down regardless. Why would you oppose a new type of venue? Especially in a place that isn’t well served?
Replying to @eli1ah
Sure, but this should be a no-brainer. Independent usic venues all around the uk are struggling significantly, no one can make a profit, bunch of them are shutting down, lots of people losing jobs etc. Also, isn’t this going into a like luxury residential zone that has a luxury apple store? That’s not cool bro that’s a mall. That’s like YouTube theatre at La live type beat. Finally, this is just an additional node in the broader contentification of music and culture — it’s literally not about live performances in the space. It’s not a concert it’s a shoot for capturing music content for socials that’s functionally promo.

Good news for London. Be fun to see diff versions of this from the DSP across the city, especially at that 600-1000 cap level
