The vehicular arms race exists because US protectionism blocks access to a global market of smaller, cheaper cars. We are trapped buying massive domestic tanks. The result is out of control infrastructure costs and 44k people dead from vehicular violence every year.

Yes. All the posts are talking about age verification and front end baskets and e-bikes/bike lanes in general, but no one is talking about the Truck and the big front end that creates deadly blindspots. Trucks in the city should follow direct-vision designs like @NYCSanitation

A side guard on this large truck driving through crowded Manhattan - a rail or barrier keeping pedestrians or cyclists from being dragged under between the front and rear wheels - could have saved a life. We need a whole lot more scrutiny on these exemptions.

BREAKING: Multiple pedestrians struck by a private sanitation truck at 1st Ave & E. 14th St in Manhattan’s East Village
A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition after being pinned under the vehicle, police sources say. At least one other person taken to Bellevue with severe injuries to the leg and pelvis.

This deserves to be a big scandal for Jessica Tisch:
A New Yorker was standing on the sidewalk. A cop wanted to illegally park his personal car there. When the civilian refused to move, officers got physical and even threatened to run him over. No punishment from Tisch.

This was the second child killed by a turning school bus in Brooklyn this year — we just keep letting it happen.
We need to
- Slow down every street to 20mph
- Install speed limiters in all big vehicles
- Get low-visibility vehicles off our streets
- Daylight every intersection
I am devastated by the loss of a
9-year-old boy struck this morning while crossing the street in Williamsburg.
My heart is with his family and loved ones as they endure this tragic loss.
Children should be safe walking around our city, and this horrific road death is a painful reminder that we must continue to use every tool available to make our streets safe for all New Yorkers.
