Ergo is a p2p network.
A GPU driven PoW blockchain that secures a programmable eUTXO system that natively incorporates cryptography, assets, privacy and state economics.
P2P networks are about keeping coordination low in the protocol. A p2p network that can absorb more into its base protocol requires less above it.
This is why Ergo is not trying to do one thing, one narrative, instead it is trying a multitude of things possible, all while staying low in the network.
That last bit is the most important part.
Crypto is about minimizing control assumptions at the lowest possible layer. It should be anyway.
Run a node to be a first class citizen in a p2p network.
There is power in being a peer.

Expected completion: around 2045, following the EIP-27 schedule
“Circulating supply” here means ERG already emitted; some is locked in contracts or potentially lost, so the liquid supply is lower.

Now, on every release, mainnet node bootstrap via NiPoPoWs and UTXO set snapshot is tested on Github! github.com/ergoplatform/ergo… . Takes ~15 minutes on commodity laptop , ~40-60 min on Github CI instance. You have no excuse not to run a full node now!

Ergo's storage rent is one of those parts of Ergo that is really worth understanding because there's a lot more thought behind it than just “charging rent.”

Moving data out of the active state can absolutely reduce the burden on normal nodes. But if that data must remain available so an owner can revive it later, somebody still has to store and serve it.
The storage need is still there.

It's a simple bargain:
Use your boxes sometime within 4 years and the clock resets. Drop an erg in a box with your tokens for long term storage.
Abandon state for years and eventually that state pays for itself, dust gets cleaned up, lost ERG and tokens can return to circulation and miners get another long-term revenue source.
It’s part of the economic design of the chain and one deeply thought of pre genesis.
