There is a world of difference between generosity and entitlement. Wise words from someone I highly respect -
@suganthan
I want to write about something I’ve noticed increasingly over the last few years.
And before anyone misunderstands the point, this is specifically about people who don’t know me personally.
The distinction is incredibly simple.
I’m very generous with my time.
I decide when I give my time away. You don’t.
I publish research for free. I share experiments, data, tools and things I’ve spent hundreds of hours figuring out. I help people privately. I answer questions. I’ve spent hours helping people while expecting absolutely nothing in return.
Recently, someone approached our agency about potentially working together.
A call was booked and cancelled.
Then came a substantial brief from their CEO.
Could we research this?
Could we answer these questions?
Could we analyse their business?
Could we turn everything into a document?
Then a presentation?
Could we provide case studies?
More examples?
Could we revise the presentation again?
We did far more than we normally would because we believed we were helping a serious prospective client understand how we think before discussing an engagement.
Then came the clarification.
The next conversation would be purely “informational.”
No commercials.
They wanted access to an expert who could answer the CEO’s questions, demonstrate their expertise, provide more research and essentially educate the company.
If they got everything they needed and were sufficiently convinced, perhaps commercial discussions could happen later.
At that point, I said no.
Not because I was offended.
Not because I’m arrogant.
Because that’s consulting.
And consulting is what we sell.
We run a serious agency business. Our team has real work to do. Our time has value.
If you want advice, ask for advice.
If you want consulting, hire a consultant.
If you’re genuinely considering working with us, be upfront about your process and intentions from the beginning.
Don’t manufacture a commercial opportunity because what you actually want is free access to expertise.
The same applies personally.
If you don’t know me, please don’t assume that because I’m approachable online, I’m automatically available to you.
I’m happy to help people when I can.
I do it all the time.
But generosity is not entitlement.
My time isn’t more valuable than yours.
But it isn’t less valuable either.
Respect it, and I’ll respect yours.
Again, none of this applies to my actual friends, colleagues or people I’ve built relationships with over the years. It also doesn’t apply to the many people I’ve met online who have been respectful and kind to me, shared my work, helped me with something or simply made an effort to give something back.
Those people know who they are.
Message me whenever you want.
Thank you.
