Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon was confronted by a heckler Monday at a Banned Books Week event at Café Resistance, her Jacksonville bookstore and coffee shop, over a wall in the shop featuring 12 Black activists, including Angela Davis, George Jackson, Mumia Abu-Jamal and Assata Shakur.
"Multiple people on that wall are people that killed cops," the person said, implying Nixon was celebrating them. "So am I supposed to hide history?" Nixon replied. "Do you want me to ban history?" She said "people should know what they did, what they were convicted of, what [they] were exonerated of."
Nixon then defended the Black Panther Party's legacy, pointing to its free breakfast programs and community health clinics. She contrasted those with Republican Sen. Ashley Moody's vote for Trump's 2025 tax and spending law, which Nixon said is cutting Medicaid and threatening health care for hundreds of thousands of Floridians.
