The EJS Center warmly congratulates Amujae Leader Cllr. Charlyne M. Brumskine on her appointment as a Judge of the ECOWAS Court of Justice. At the recent ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government summit, regional leaders approved Cllr. Brumskine among five new judges to the Court, the body responsible for safeguarding citizens’ rights across West Africa. A distinguished lawyer, entrepreneur, and advocate for the rule of law and gender rights, Cllr. Brumskine brings nearly two decades of legal experience to the bench. Her appointment reflects exactly the kind of principled public leadership the Amujae Initiative exists to advance: women stepping into the highest seats of decision-making and shaping the institutions that serve their people. From political parties having access to the phone numbers of registered voters and sending them personalized messages, to personally identifiable information being used in chatbots, there is clearly a privacy protection problem. Ghana has a Data Protection Commission, but what is it doing about this? Perhaps the country needs to face a class action suit before it starts taking data protection seriously. This also raises concerns about what is happening with all the data that has been collected as part of the Ghana Card project.
