It’s telling that nearly all architects and engineers in the country would roll their eyes in horror at this and yet a) it would be completely normal 150 years ago & b) about 80% of the public would prefer it.
What's depressing about the Botley Road Bridge is that thought was put into the design, but it still looks ugly.
Planning docs claim the "gothic themed shape" along the side of the bridge is "inspired" by and "sympathetic to" Oxford's character.

The key question for this supposed anti-disinformation centre is whether it is *exclusively* mandated to counter foreign interference.
If there is even the possibility that it will be turned on UK citizens it will justifiably provoke massive resistance.
BREAKING PM Andy Burnham has announced plans for a new National Centre for Information Defence to improve community cohesion and prevent a "distorted and untrue narrative about Britain".
The new centre will draw up expertise and best practice, and ensure the UK has the defensive capability necessary to combat information warfare and build national resilience.
Mr Burnham said: "There is no national security without a strong, cohesive society. That’s the starting point for everything we hold dear and everything we want to achieve. But the fact is that it has been under attack.
"In recent years we have seen an industrial-scale assault by hostile actors on the information environment in the UK and many of our allies.
"Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people’s fears. They’ve used bots and fake websites. Falsified newspaper articles.
"Forged the branding of 28 British organisations – including universities and the BBC. They’ve amplified far right narratives. And we have evidence that they tried to interfere with the 2019 General Election.
"We also know that they have tried to stoke tensions and unrest in the wake of horrific events. The idea that anyone would try to use such things to their advantage is just repulsive – but it is what they do."

In many ways, the British Left was made in Holborn and St Pancras. Marx wrote 'Capital' in the reading rooms of the British Museum, and the Left-liberal intellectuals of the Bloomsbury Set loved in triangles and lived in its leafy squares.
A group of middle-class reformers founded the Fabian Society a stone’s throw from Regent’s Park, while Lenin rented cheap rooms in Tavistock Place to write 'Materialism' and 'Empirio-Criticism'. It feels wholly appropriate, then, that the by-election taking place here in three weeks’ time will define the Left’s future.

It would be soothing to think that warnings about AI doom are fearmongering, that everyone involved is either deluded or corrupt.
Likewise, it would also be soothing to think that One Weird Trick from the US government, neatly duplicated in Beijing, will solve the problem and restrain the competitive dynamic.
But the situation is much more tangled than that. Old feuds, both political and personal, have been imported into what should ultimately be a technical debate; conflicting financial interests have tarnished honest work; and ad hominem attacks are obscuring robust critique.
All the more reason to take good-faith whistleblowers like Jacob Coxon seriously.
