“Trespassing on our land to remove the sacred saguaros is like having masked men break into your house and take away your children,” Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Verlon Jose said in a statement. “The ha:sañ are our family, as much a part of us as any blood relative. To destroy them by the thousands carves a wound in our hearts that will not heal.”
Quote from @EmilyBregel's feature story on the thousands of sacred saguaros now targeted by DHS bulldozers on the Tohono O'odham nation to make way for two layers of border wall .
I took this photo at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in 2020, where extensive saguaro destruction took place for wall construction.

🚨 On Monday, Indigenous Peoples' Day, thousands of saguaros the Tohono O'odham consider people will be ripped out of the ground, for not one wall, but two.
The saguaros are called ha:şañ. Removing one isn't just destroying a plant, it's considered an act of violence against a person.
The Nation was only notified Friday.
The Nation filed an emergency injunction with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals this week trying to stop it. Removing a saguaro without a permit is illegal. DHS is moving forward anyway, citing a border emergency to bypass that requirement.
Chairman Verlon Jose put it plainly: "Trespassing on our land to remove the sacred saguaros is like having masked men break into your house and take away your children.”
But here's what you can do today. There's a way to speak up on this exact project. It's in the first reply.

Did you know you only need a small brain to make silly little drawings?
ALT 4 panel comic: Panel 1: pink blob guy on a table, pencil in their hands. Grey circle on a piece of paper and a glass of water on the table. They say “look here” Panel 2: Proudly, they hold up the drawing of a grey blobby character on two stick legs up in the air. The pink blob says “I drew this!” Panel 3: Satisfied they sit back down on the table. They now go “it’s not much, but..” The grey drawing looks a bit peeved because the drawer is calling it “not much” Panel 4: But it’s okay, because now the pink blob is very pleased finally. He says “it came from my brain!” Holding the pencil up. The grey drawing blob is happy again, too. End well, all well!
Did you know that DEI also encompasses telling veteran stories, which is why I started veteran vanguard at Bungie for veterans? It includes disabilities, life experiences, and yes, even white men. Trying to exert control where you have none is directionless behavior. I hope that gets better for you.
i grew up on boxed sets and album liner notes, written by famous music writers and critics. it was my dream to write one myself, and @starbomb helped me achieve it. writing the notes for their boxed set is a lifelong dream come true. got them all to sign it last night. 😌💕
